@ Booner

They may very well keep Miller but then what, trade him for a much smaller return or let him walk if they are a bubble team at the deadline again? Who knows I guess. We can only guess what management will do at this point. Not much to base a prediction on.

I don't think the offers were great TBH. I think if there was a knock your socks off offer on the table the deal would have been done already. I don't see any team excited to jump in and give Miller 5 x 7.5 including Canucks. The cap has some real restraints for at least half the league.

It's crazy when you look at what people in here thought players could realistically be traded for. 1st rounder for Mott. Top prospect, impact player, two 1st round picks for Miller. Quality young established player at a reasonable salary for Boeser.

Mott for a 4rth woke them the fk up though and what followed was a lot of lecturing how our players suck and Benning screwed us from some of those same guys. Crazy pendulum swings in here.

You call internet arguments fighting. No wonder you are so confused by what happened.

- boonerbuck

Not confused at all, I'm trying to ease yours. I have been in the middle of enough of those to know exactly what happened, what's going to happen, and why. You seem to be stuck on the why.

Just curious, do you include the ones on this thread in your personal 150 fight total?

I’m talking in the future, but I know it’s just wishful thinking on my part

There have been many showing envy for other teams rebuilds in the past. Although Canucks have treaded water for the most part, many of those grass is greener teams have had to do resets already and failed miserably on the said better earlier rebuilds. Now, it can be argued that those resets may be putting them on a better track than the Canucks... but it just goes to show you it's more of a flavor of the week than a rational argument most times.

I think the Canucks will ride Miller for the year up to TDL and then take a first a third and two B prospects very much like what Toffoli got . ( Cap structure)

Same with Boeser I can see him sign a one year deal at 7.5 and traded at TDL with half the salary retained and get a first in return .

I have a feeling the new Mgmt group is going to need this full year to get traction. Too many restraints league wide this year. I can see some mid range moves in the summer like maybe adding Nitchushkin or something .

Linus Karlsson maybe Jasek will be added as new pieces but I expect a quiet year for one more year.

I hope the players feel that way. For the ones that do, you have the heart any team needs.

As a person not in that dressing room, the biggest games are now in the past.

As former Florida Panthers scout Rhys Jessop tweeted recently: “Most of your prospects are probably bad.”

Also might help to hold onto Miller just so you can get another 1st in the 2023 draft instead of 2022

I always hold out hope. Very few and far between I think a prospect makes the NHL though. Especially with Jim's swing for the fences.

For a lot of the players things the past couple years have been whack. Irregular games, no games. Now playing 60 plus games after a year off. It might take a couple years for players to find their strides.

I hope this new management isn't afraid of bringing some of the players to Abbotsford though.

A small offensive forward looks like a solid bottom 6 piece?

Unless his defensive play has gone from a weakness to a strength, I doubt it.

By the time the Canucks hired Allvin on Jan. 26, he’d served as the Penguins’ director of amateur scouting, as an assistant GM and as the interim GM, after Canucks president Jim Rutherford resigned last year as Pittsburgh’s general manager.

There are always new questions to dig into, many of which will help him still as a general manager, he believes.

“There’s always new things to learn about players. Where they’re coming from? What they’re talking? What didn’t work, why was he skating so bad at a young age and now his skating is good enough to be an NHLer? Why did I miss that? How do you assess character and maturity? I think character is important in building a team. You need good people in the dressing room,” Allvin said.

“How much do they love the game? What’s their passion for the game?

“It’s on us to walk them through it. You can get guys coming up here, playing a couple of games, they think they’re NHL players but they’re going to soon realize that it’s easy to play a couple games but once you get into the trenches, going forward, you’re on the road, it’s going to be hard. That’s where you’ve got to help them prepare for those.”

Patience as an organizational philosophy is needed.

“It’s not a sprint to get to the NHL. My biggest thing would be to tell my staff that you’re not going to find a perfect player, except for maybe one or two in the draft that are exceptional.

“We as an organization need to work with the players. We need to help them to maximize their chances and we need the scouts to see something in them. If it is their hockey sense, their skill level, their character or speed, we need to see something there. And we need to work with every single one. It’s on us.”

A number of current Vancouver Canucks scouts have contracts that are expiring this summer, though Allvin wouldn’t say if changes were coming or even if more scouts were needed.

Allvin gave credit to the work that Ryan Johnson and Chris Higgins have done in player development but also recognized they need more support. He wouldn’t commit to what changes might be in the offing but did say that more “structure” was needed in the organization.

“There shouldn’t be any unknowns. I think the players want to understand ‘what’s the expectations of me,” Allvin said. “You need players from underneath pushing up. I want to create internal competition, that it’s going to be hard to be in the lineup. Everyday, how do you prepare yourself, what kind of habits do you have?

“We have some good players here in place. I think every single player down there in the room have something to prove. We don’t have the superstar. We’re not a contending team right now. So every single player has something to prove to us. And that’s going to be the mindset moving forward.”

Allvin knows he has some tough roster decisions to make in the months to come, with Brock Boeser needing a new contract and both J.T. Miller and Bo Horvat heading into the final years of their deals. And yes, the salary cap presents challenges.

“I you want to be a good team, there’s only so much you can pay for players. You can pick and pay one or two players a lot of money, but then you know, the team in front of you is not good.”
