Nick Paul has been traded to Tampa Bay.

Jamie Benn gonna get suspended.

Dubas better have more than Gio and Blackwell as his TDL acquisitions. This is simply not enough.

He has some cap flexibility left — 4M or so with LTIR in play? Needs to use it all or wtf.

Giordano is still a very good NHL D-man if he wasn't the Rangers wouldn't have been trying so hard to get him. Good shot from the point (a weakness for the Leafs) Excellent at clearing the front of the net (also needed) can cross-check with the best of them.

What did you expect? He missed his chance to alter this lineup in a meaningful way last summer. He did well today imo.

He said openly he only was going to make one deal for a d man (the new forward was part of that deal)

He said openly that Muzzin is skating again and they hope he’ll be back before the post season.

Therefore the money available will sit aside for when Muzzin gets back.

I also think Dubas had a pretty good day. I saw a Yahoo sports headline that said the leafs traded a fan favourite. I got excited until I realized they were talking about Dermott.

So which forward gets dropped?

Gio is no longer a “very good” d-man. He’s a legit Top 4 presence but he’s nowhere near his Norris days. His offence has dried up and the jury is still out whether his numbers were propped up by Soucy this season. (there was a good breakdown article about this I read that have conveniently forgotten the link to)

Having said that, the Leafs have improved but this move, IMHO, does not match those made by their divisional rivals.

Blackwell? Meh… Marginal improvement on the 4th.

I’ll have to disagree with the “significantly” better team assessment.

They’ve moved the needle slightly but so has every other contender other than… the Canes? (who have been inexplicably quiet)

Who cares how old he was. If he was younger he would be a Norris trophy D man and the Leafs would have had to give up multiple 1sts and prospects.

We have too many holes and questions marks to just go all in with this group. Roster needs balancing and goaltending needs to be properly addressed going forward. You need assets to do these things, and Dubas pushing all his chips in now makes no sense.
