The reason I ask is that Mittelstadt is a Minnesota boy. Going with Rossi and Mitts down the middle would be a lot cheaper for them - Hank Balling
Ryan Hartman is the Center on their number one line, at least for now, and his contract is cheap. |

Possibly. I think back to when they could have brought back Pominville for a reasonable contract and they didn't. Are these similar situations? - Up2nuthun
they're two totally different players. Why Pommer wasn't signed for another year is a mystery to me, he was still a capable offensive player for 2-3M. I believe Kyle is a stronger leader that they really want to surround the new core with. Until his play falls off a cliff, I think they keep him around. Probably 1 year deals after his contract expires.

If Minnesota doesn't end up signing their 2018 1st rounder Filip Johansson, could be an interesting free agent signing.

They do have an elite player at LW, which greatly helps. |

That's 3 franchise tags for middling tight ends. Christ.
Shultz, Howard, Gesicki.
I guess Schultz is more higher end. |

I know you're excited about Jack Quinn but let's give it a year or two. He'll get there.
The team is under developed but they're creating a team without an elite C, which is possible but requires high end scoring talent elsewhere. Excited to add a stronger Jack Quinn and 2022 #1. |

The team is building around 2 1OA defensemen, the forward core is good but no draft pick or Rochester player will move the needle enough in the next 2 years.
Minny is building similar to washington with Ovie, Chicago with Kane, the Sabres invested in D not F. No other team is doing this. |

This plan is heavily dependent on at least one of them being elite. Not many teams win the cup with no elite players |

Be honest with reality, the plan is hopefully one of them is here in 2 years.

This is false. You're completely ignoring all of the U23 forwards here and Tuch. They are missing a high end offensive talent (which may be here in Quinn eventually) but their model appears to be committee offense.
I'm not the guy that says just wait to incorporate the next draft pick. I'm well aware of their limited impacts not named McEichel Matthews. There's some work to do via trades to incorporate one or two high end offensive pieces and one or two RHDs (leaving goalie out of this) and simple analytics easily shows their deficiencies beyond simply youth.
Teams don't trade established 1Cs willingly. The Sabres can vastly overpay, trade for an older guy as a placeholder, or develop a team like there isn't one coming and hope one is found in the draft in the next few years. And right now, they're shaping the lineup like the latter.

No team wins the cup with just elite Dmen. Zero.

No team has won the cup without an Elite d-man since the '06 Hurricanes.
Boston's 2011 Stanley cup team didn't have an "Elite" offensive player. Offence by committee, solid D and a great goalie. |
