a lot of the time, when a team gives up a good young player, its because they want to win now. The young player isnt ready to contribute. Happens all the time.

PT21's post looked at the ice time leaders on Cup wining teams post lockout. Expanding the list to include the finalists gives you more data and more info.

We are in agreement that the Flyers plan and approach outlined at their recent press conference is a pipe dream.

However something that PT21 doesn't seem to get and perhaps you might also in regards to the post that PT21 replied to is the difference between probability and possibility. We can look back through history and see that it does happen.

My contention and overall outlook on the Flyers and the approach they need to take. Is that I think the Flyers are delusional and incompetent for thinking that they can trade and sign their way to the top in a short period of time. While taking that approach could certainly improve the team to the point of being a playoff team. For me personally, the bar is set higher. I won't be satisfied with just that accomplishment.

I completely understand the difference between possibility and probability. Sure the Flyers could possibly trade for Makar and McDavid this offseason but the probability is very low. That’s a bit of an exaggeration but not by much. For the anti-tankers that say it’s possible based on history, they should give real world examples of the kind of trades the Flyers have to make and just as importantly give current players that would be available in the next two offseasons that the Flyers have a realistic chance of acquiring. Just saying it’s possible because Chris Pronger was traded once or Tyler Seguin was traded once as a justification for anti tanking isn’t good enough. Who is the Chris Pronger or Tyler Seguin of today that would be available to fix this mess. I don’t even care if the salary cap numbers won’t work. I don’t think the pieces are even going to be available to fix it regardless if Fletcher has a blank check.

Craig Patrick..who was also responsible for some first round flubs and Free agent flubs as a GM. There was bad blood when he was fired and Ray Shero took over, for a few years.

He was their GM since just before their first cups.. A long run by todays standards..

Malkin waited a year to come over and was playing in the KHL or whatever it was called. Letang was not a first round IIRC.. Some of those picks were no brainers.

Doesn't take a genius to pick Crosby and Malkin. Look at some of their other first rounders.

You just did it yourself. Look around the league. Look at the high quality players that were acquired by trade. In free agency. Anyone being objective knows that they exist. Anyone can look at the free agency list and see who might be available if they remain unsigned. You can make the probability argument but those that say that the right players can possibly be obtained are just being optimistic and being a fan. Stop telling them they're wrong and that it's not possible. They're not wrong. It's also possible that the Flyers could pick a high level player in the draft. In the first round or later. Every time someone brings up that it's possible, like broken records, PT21 and a few others such as yourself bring up the probabilities of it. I think others are aware of that.

i like looking at the last 3 years of ronnies picks and the 1st 3 years of chucks picks compared to this list. Even including farabee and hart. Doesnt look like Ronnie was such a mastermind in the draft. not encouraging that obrien is pretty far down the list. Wheres German? ouch gotta hit on first round picks

Probability just ranks the possibilities. More to the point, those who point to "look that's possible too" usually dont realize/dont know/dont internalize just how improbable "that's possible too" path is.

I hate the fact that ultimate success in a sport should be so correlated with things completely outside the sport.

It's truly weird how at the age of 18 (3-4 years before their far more scouted and publicly exposed NFL counterparts), those budding NHL players who are going to be even regular players is so much more predictable from draft position than in the NFL. In latter, a 2nd round player is expected to be a day 1 starter!. I don't understand this at all. It should be the other way around.

There are 24 starters on an NFL team. There are only a max of 24 players on an entire NHL team.

It's arrogance to suggest that others don't understand the probabilities.
