That one was a quote from Tommy Boy from Chris Farley, it was supposed to be common ground but you ruined it!

What is with this obsession of retaining salary? The Canucks need cap space, the days of Benning cheerfully helping out cap-maxed teams are over.
- Marwood

Well it is on the table if the return reflects it. The question didn’t say it was mandatory. Retaining is a weapon if it garners a good prospect in a better package that reflects retention.

He's not grossly overpaid, retention, in my opinion, is a sign of weakness. I don't think it should be an option.

Looking at NYR as a prime trading partner. They have many needed assets that can get them Miller. They have cap to do it straight up without retaining but next year they face cap decisions to make.

So it comes down to what the best package we could get. Idk if retaining is best or not. That is for you pundits decide.

One strategy to be used is making trades that allow cap space to cover Halak bonuses this year.

It is actually up to JR/PA to decide.

If the Ranger fans had there way, we would end up with B level player and prospects. Chytil, Lundqvist and a 2nd.

We can be pretty certain that isn’t enough & maybe the Rags start there. It doesn't meet ‘the best offer’.

CBJ needs a top C but no rumours they have shown interest in Miller.

If Canucks trade Miller, they will also be in need of a top line centre

Anyone care to assess these players & prospects floor & ceiling…

Lafreniere
Kaako
Othmann
Kravtsov
Cuylle
Schneider
Lundkvist
Robertsson

These are the pieces I’d be interested in in the right combo. A late 1st is in the running but not terribly excited about it. The fit after the smoke settles is important.

Yes & a huge consideration if they trade him. Leaving it to Petey & Bo looks risky. Petey has to be legit 1C for it to succeed.

Meh, doesn't make it a weakness. If a team like NYR offer a B prospect in a package, but will upgrade that to an A prospect if the Canucks retain 50%, is that weakness, or just getting the best deal?

Retaining on JTM will only cost max 2.625 against the cap next year – not a huge number at all. Especially as one of the reason to trade him (free up cap space for Horvat and Hoglander) means the retained amount will come off the books at that moment. As well, if you're getting good young players back, their ELCs will offset that cap amount.

As I see it we need top 4 RHD with size skating & scoring.

LW depth is another hole to fill.

Prospects obviously is lacking.

A home run trade for me is…
Miller(retain 50%)

Who said one of the reasons to trade him was to free up capspace to sign Horvat and Hoglander?

JR was pretty clear when he said a team in the position the Canucks are in(non-playoff team) shouldn't be in cap trouble like they are.(paraphrasing)

Also, I can't see Hoglander getting paid much more than1.2 million.
