...or simply understand that you live in a dominion .. a community .. a democracy. Which, very simply, results in you being on the side of the majority, sometimes ...and the side of the minority sometimes. We give up some individual freedoms to live in a community.
- The Law

So many people do not understand this.
They wave the flag, yell freedom and other foolishness.

Its all political. Right wing nuts.
- Fakepartofme

Obviously we go far down a rathole away from the purpose of the conversation on this board, but it does bear mentioning that there are nuts on both sides and there are reactionary nuts who are polarized because of the behaviour of both sides.

One of the things that people ignore is that a lot of right-wing polarization is caused by fear. Fear of losing their jobs, being marginalized, losing their "culture", losing their religion, losing their freedom, losing their "way of life" - which they somehow distinguish from the others - and so on. That manifests itself in racist rhetoric, misogyny, bigotry and so on. That is actually where the government CAN help, but doesn't As progress rolls forward and we, as a nation, move to embrace and help more immigrants and empower women and normalize LGBTQ behaviour, there are people who are not only feeling marginalized, but are actually being affected in some ways. A lot of those are straight white males and they see and hear the things we're doing to help others, but they are feeling vilified and they're reacting to it.

I'm not saying the reaction is right, but I am saying there are things to do to ensure that programs are inclusive of everyone and helpful for everything regardless of ethnicity, gender or preference.

Side story, and I know this is already long - when I left home and went to look for work I went to an NDP program called "Futures" to help me land a job. I am already a fast typist (which you might guess from how long-winded I am), and I aced the test with about 110 wpm with no errors, and they had some other stuff like vocabulary, grammar, math . . . which were also simple. I walked out of the office certain to get a job. But no one called. I called back and they had nothing for me repeatedly. After 3 months I received a pamphlet in the mail espousing the great success of the Futures program and how it had successfully placed jobs for x women, y black men, z immigrants . . .and I realized that the program was never for me.

I wasn't angry at anyone per se, but I really wished they had told me that I was never going to be considered and was wasting my time.

I think that I would have had a right to be mad at other people there, and I think there are people on the right-side today who are in that wheelhouse and the government is making it happen.

I’m loving social media Brad Marchand who said the only way the Coyotes got 5,000 people to games was to give away 4,500 tickets.

I guess the NHL will just pretend that this is ok.
They've lost so much money in Arizona.....move the team to Saskatchewan, it will make so much more cash.

Years ago I had read an article that said Phoenix was one of the largest media "homes" in the U.S. for whatever reason. Not home to a lot of viewers per se but home to the companies that buy the rights and connect/network with the big ads/sponsorships. I don't know how true that was/is but it'd be nice to hear an explanation.

You may have this backwards. Their racism, bigotry and misogyny manifest in a fear of them losing blah, blah, blah.
Society has always been on the side of helping the straight white man, its now finally catching up to help out those who dont fall in that category.

I don't get the end game for this at all. I think it was a 3 year lease with an option for a 4th if the new arena takes longer than anticipated. Playing a university arena in a professional sports league for 4 years?

Who would sign there? If you were drafted by this organization (Shane Wright), wouldn't you rather hold out and be traded to not that craphole? How do you build a sustainable fanbase with that?

I agree that Arizona is actually not the deathtrap market that many think it is - hockey is selling in Vegas - and it's a huge city. They need ownership that cares and they need ownership that is going to work with the city to make it a mutual experience for fans.

Wedgie is right, this is doomed.

Futures was a youth employment program. It wasn’t geared specifically at racially marginalized groups. It was run by community based agencies who were assessed on their performance. I’m pretty sure they didn’t get “bonus points” for finding jobs for non-white youth. (These are old memories.)

This article makes me think it's a no go for any crowd there bigger than 25 people or 500 maybe?

It's a tad confusing - is this soccer game considered an outdoor gathering or a sporting event (but the sporting event limits seem to be about indoor facilities).

That's not entirely fair.

In a lot of the flyover states, there's guys who lived their lives the right way - paid their taxes, worked hard at their jobs, raised families, etc.

Then the banks collapsed and were bailed out. They lost their jobs, and those same banks seized their homes. They don't qualify for job retraining programs. Government isn't helping them. They have done nothing wrong, and they are hurting, and nobody is coming to help them.

I'd be angry if I were them. And I'd have every right to be angry.

Sadly, they are being further victimized by these right wing groups who are using them.

The NHL is ok with this as they know its a temporary thing. Similar to what the Islanders were doing prior to moving into their new rink.

As a 20 year-old straight white male when I went to Futures, I can absolutely attest that what I said is exactly what happened. I typed 110 words per minute without an error, and received 100% on each of the subsequent tests. I left that office knowing that they hadn't received a candidate who had done that well on the tests - they said so. I was positive I was going to land something.

And the pamphlet I received is also true. It was never broadcast as a plan with a focus, but that pamphlet made it very clear that there was an agenda and I was not on it. It was also a plan started by the NDP. You can read between the lines on that and think I'm an a-hole, but I honestly have no problem with that type of program existing - just tell people so that they can direct their efforts more effectively.

I think the idea of government training / retraining / placement programs are an excellent idea. People lose those jobs in industries that fade - find ways to help them help and find themselves again; my wife's uncle worked in a paper mill in New Brunswick and when it shut down he was definitely feeling lost, used up and done - people like that need a step up. If we need specialized programs to help with the placement for immigrants then do it. Again, people want to work and want to live, so there should be ways to help them do it if they're struggling and in some cases there might require specialized programs for it. Just make it clear what the purpose of a program is!

The Coyotes don't even have approval from the municipality yet to start designing the thing, and that's in doubt.

Realistically, you are 6-8 years from having an arena ready.

This is what I'm trying to say as well. There are people who are struggling and it shouldn't matter about their ethnicity, their gender, their sexual orientation - they need help, and they should be able to find it, not be ignored.

I do agree that it would have been helpful if something was said to you so you didn't waste your time, effort or even your brain power thinking something would come from it.

So here's a crazy stat for you:

The two current wild card teams in the East (by both points and win%) are Boston and Washington.

Boston is on pace for a 105 point season.

Washington is on pace for a 103 point season.

The next closest team (%) is the Islanders - at .500, they are on pace for an 82 point season.

I've never seen the playoff races over this early.
