Do people really talk to their devices? - Fakepartofme
Both my mother-in-law and father can't remember the names to use the smart devices in their homes (and my dad can't remember on his Apple watch).
It would be much easier if I could reprogram the stuff to say "hey phone, call my son." |

Anyone else here uncomfortable that Bonds and Clemens weren't elected to the Hall of Fame?
At the end of the day, neither of them were ever convicted of using steroids.
Do I think they juiced? 100%
But with no proof, I can't agree with keeping them out. - Atomic Wedgie

Not worth losing sleep but Bonds was the best player and Clemons was one of the best pitchers in a generation where cheating was widespread, like really, really widespread. |

It really does feel different this year though.
Problem is, every team in the playoffs looks good enough to go all the way.... so nothing is guaranteed.

Yup, but he tainted it all and stole Hank's title.
Sad part is, he was really good before the steroids, he may not have beating Hank's record but I think he would still made a good case for the HOF.
Ah well. |

The problem with Joe Rogan et al is that they trumpet dangerous information for hours on their platform, and then when corrected, put out a single tweet.
That's not enough to undo the damage.
If Joe Rogan had ethics, he would give equal time and prominence to correcting the misinformation he spread.
Instead, we get a single tweet. - Atomic Wedgie
Joe Rogan has 8M followers on Twitter. That's orders of magnitude more viewers than Joe had for that interview with Josh. Your assertion that the damage done by that particular podcast dwarfs that single tweet is unfalsifiable and likely total nonsense.
Joe corrected his views based on new information. He pivoted in front of 8M followers and however many countless retweets that were spawned off of that. This should be celebrated: he changed his (frank)ing mind, sucked up his ego, and tweeted about it.
Having said that, whenever I hear someone start a sentence with "the problem with [so and so]" I know exactly the type of narrative that is being pushed: "this speech is too dangerous!!!". Yeah, that's not how the principles of free speech work, bro.
The ACLU defended neo-Nazis in Skokie years ago. Doesn't mean they supported those neo-Nazis and it sure as hell didn't result in a spike of neo-Nazi support after the fact. Censoring "problematic" speech and expression is problematic in and of itself.
I don't agree with a lot of what Joe says but I also don't agree lockstep with anyone. Doesn't mean I think that person, whom I disagree with, should be censored or deplatformed. |

i have a Twitter ID. Havent logged in and looked at my feed, or whatever, in years. 8m followers on twitter does not equate to the people actively listening to his podcast.
of those 8m followers, Id bet a very small portion saw any correction he put on twitter. nearly every person that tuned into that podcast heard what he had to say there. |

I think Neil is canceling himself from Spotify and the podcast you referenced was after Neil had made his announcement. His complaint is that Spotify doesn’t have a misinformation policy that allows continued dangerous information to be spread.
I’m also getting tired of the whining about cancel culture. What’s wrong with people using the market to hold companies accountable for their actions? - Canada Cup
a) I was making a larger point about Joe Rogan having the ability to pivot based on new information. Neil wants to play a zero sum game: me or Joe. Why do we need to play a zero sum game in the form of censorship?
b) We shouldn't need or want tech companies being the arbiter of what is "dangerous" or "misinformation".
c) I don't give a (frank) that you're "tired" of the cancel culture narrative. The market should be able to dictate what succeeds and what fails without the need to enforce censorship. The principles of freedom of speech and expression are the most import principles in this society. |

We have all sorts of devices set up. I love it. I can be chopping chicken and say, "Hey Google, play my music." and it will play from a list of songs I like. I can be doing the same and it starts to get dark and ask it to turn on the kitchen lights, to dim to the family room to 40%, to dim the dining room, to turn off all lights as I'm going to bed. We had the Christmas tree and all the lights setup as a device, so we could say, "Hey Google, turn on Christmas." and all the lights would come on.
Some of these things are very useful. Some aren't. They show in the commercials people cooking from a recipe on a screen, but that's stupid and useless. Most of the time the good recipes aren't found through a verbal search and have to be manually found. I have used the Google Assistant to stream NHL.com and watch hockey if I'm doing something in another room without a TV.
The point is that there are a lot of reasons to use these things; they are convenient. |
