I saw a tweet this morning speculating that Subban will pull a Spezza next year and sign in Toronto for minimum.
I don’t hate that. |

I hadn't even realized Wood hadn't played a game this season. What's his story? He's definitely a player, when healthy, I'd love to see on the Leafs. - mjones242
been injured all season long.. trade for him, LTIR him and then have him for the playoffs? |

I think the excuse is, "but there were monsters in the Atlantic". And it is a legitimate excuse as the 1st round matchup could be absolutely horrendous because the ridiculous playoff format.
To win the Cup you need to beat teams, sure, but your chances are much more difficult when you play much more difficult teams.
The Leafs lost John Tavares minutes into Game 1. That was a significant loss and shouldn't be underestimated. There was no "easy" path once the Captain went down. - mjones242
I mean, if the playoffs started right now, you'd have the following matchups:
Boston @ Florida
Toronto @ Tampa
Washington @ Carolina
Pittsburgh @ NYR
--
Nashville @ Colorado
St. Louis @ Minnesota
Anaheim @ Vegas
LA @ Calgary
While nothing is ever truly predictable, just looking at who has played the best teams and has the best records and so on, every team in the Central is doing better than Vegas and they are leading their division. The Pacific is a pretty weak division.
In the east, you have the Metro which looks good at first glance, but Washington has been feasting on weak teams and is a .500 team against good teams; the Rangers are sub-500 against good teams. Boston is very similar to Washington - romping over the weaker teams, and playing @ .500 against playoff teams.
At the moment the teams to watch out for are Florida, Tampa, Toronto, Colorado and Carolina. Minnesota looks pretty good, but they are 10-8 against playoff calibre teams - most of their wins (15-2) are against non-playoff teams. Colorado is just waltzing over everyone (16-1; 13-7).
So, realistically the Leafs, Tampa or Florida are probably going to have the toughest time winning their division - this is assuming that Boston doesn't have more rabbits in their hat, because they are Boston - you never know. It does seem a bit like they are on that projected downward trend, but they're packed full of good players and experience.
In June I was on-board with the get-it-done or fire Dubas, Keefe, Shanahan and launch half the players into the Sun plan. Now, after watching them play this year, I like what I see. Every team has warts - all of them. We can romanticize Tampa and Florida and Carolina and Colorado . . . but the truth is that they all mediocre bottom-6 guys as well (Florida is probably the deepest), and no one really loves their 5/6 d-men either.
If we fired Keefe & Dubas, I sincerely don' t know if they get better. It's easy to argue that if they lose again, and make fair-value moves (i.e., Marner traded for a #1 defenseman), they can be much better - but I really don't know. I felt more convicted about it in the off-season than I do now that's for sure. |

Umm, they lost that game...understandably.
But then went on to win 3 straight games against a team that was 18pts below them in the standings.
No excuses. |

I wouldnt move Dermott for Schenn though.
Who replaces Dermott in the line up? Not Schenn. He's a good 7th and can fill in here and there but on a permanent basis? I dont know.
Im ok with moving Dermott out for someone better and bringing in Schenn as a 7th dman..for a late late late pick. |
