What I like about Rutherford is that he clearly does do some digging, everyone just assumed Jen Botterill would be hired by the Canucks due to her brother's connection with JR and JR talking about wanting a more diverse staff.
Instead he hires Rachael Doerrie who publicly ripped Benning to join the analytics team and now hires Castonguay as AGM for contracts and cap. Two moves no one predicted but seem to be good hires on the surface level. - Nucker101
I’m pleased the front office is getting stuffed. Far too long in the coming & was necessary. |

There were reports that Botterill was offered an AGM position and declined because she didn't want to move her family across the country. |

Yeah, I feel like Benning/Weisbrod preferred to be a 2 man show with Wall/Gear handling the cap stuff. Explains Benning’s infamous “ran out of time” comment and Brackett leaving, those 2 wanted to run the show and it was clearly too much too handle |

Ahh, makes sense, too much credit to JR then lol.
I prefer this hire anyway, I’d rather hire a player agent who’s been directly involved in front office dealings over a tv analyst, especially as AGM.
I would’ve been okay with hiring Botterill but in a smaller role and have her earn a promotion and work her way up if she impressed. |

🚨Drance trigger warning 🚨
@ThomasDrance
Émilie Castonguay is very bright. Has impressed a ton of people in the hockey world over the years, particularly during the Lafreniere draft interview process.
Collection of reactions from League contacts:
“Really professional.”
“On top of things.”
“She’s a really good hire.”
@ThomasDrance
Spoke with Jim Rutherford and Émilie Castonguay’s primary responsibilities and portfolio as AGM will include matters of CBA compliance, cap management, contract negotiation.
She’ll be involved in everything, however, as Rutherford continues to put his stamp on this club.
@ThomasDrance
In addition to interviewing four women for the AGM position and hiring Émilie, #Canucks are pushing to add another woman (or two) to the hockey ops. department in various roles.
Not sure about specific names or roles, but it sounds like one of those hires could be imminent. |

I pretty much agree with this, I think Castonguay is a great hire. |

Actually you are wrong again. I brought up Jennifer Botterill well before Benning was fired.
Bloated and I had a bit of a conversation about hiring her.
Also, Jennifer pulled out of any potential job with the Canucks, due to personal reasons |

For anyone about to cry about it being a woke agenda hire, Emilie Castonguay has a law and finance degree and is currently about to finish her masters.
Going from Weisbrod to Emilie is a fantastic change of scenery and positive move for the club. - Codes1087
Sounds like she is taking over for what Chris Gear did. |

What did I say there that makes me wrong other than Botterill apparently turning down the job?
I said the recent hires were not predicted by anyone, not Botterill. |

You said it was assumed Jennifer was considered because of her brother's connections to JR.
I am pointing out that some of us had considered her as a potential good candidate well before JR was hired as a Canuck. |

Well yeah, by the majority of fans/media, that connection was constantly made. How often do you see analysts with no NHL front office experience getting hired as AGM’s? I doubt her name comes up nearly as often if the Canucks hired a different president with no connection to her |

Did they look for a person to fill this position or did they look for a woman to fill this position?
Who were the front runners? We hear Botteril was already offered the job before Castonguay was hired. Who else was a top consideration? |

The ex-agent for former No. 1 draft pick Alexis Lafreniere, Castonguay becomes the first female assistant general manager in team history.
Castonguay became the first NHLPA certified agent in 2016 after she joined Momentum Hockey.
Castonguay, who was named one of the 25 most powerful women in hockey by Sportsnet in 2020, played four years of NCAA Division 1 hockey at Niagara University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in finance in 2009 and won a National Scholar Athlete award for her success both on the ice and in the classroom.
Following her studies at Niagara, she earned a law degree from the University of Montreal in 2012 and is a member of the Quebec Bar Association.
She has represented players as an agent at every level of hockey from junior to international to NHL |

Bingo .
I am not sure of the numbers but I have probably heard of 10 females in the last 10 years being hired in positions of significant stature in the entire NHL and Canucks are looking to make 3 hiring's in a month? Sounds like a motive.
I know nothing about the two people hired so I can't say yay or nay but I agree with what Boomer is suggesting. |

Ok so she was a agent. That much I already know. An agent for Alexis Lafreniere is neither here nor there... 25 most powerful woman in hockey... she's being compared to only woman in that statement.
Anything else?

Good for her that she got Roussel @ 4 years 12 mil but Canucks have now hired the person in charge of contracts negotiation someone who signed Roussel to 4 years 12 mil. |

I saw 10 people and 5 of whom were females interviewed for the AGM/GM job. We already know Alvin was interviewed. |
