Every team is soft and bad defensively when they lose.

Playing two rookies in the shutdown pairing was pretty obvious.

I know people love those two but if the leafs run with two rookie d-men playing substantial shutdown roles don’t be surprised if the opposition begins to get a lot of shots/goals.

Have Muzzin and Holl looked great this year? No. Are they still more stable than Sandin and Liljegren in a shutdown role? By far and away yes.

A few thoughts:

- Campbell has allowed 18 goals in the past 4 games - he has been less than stellar (.866S%). Some of the blame is surely at his feet.

- last night, the Rags only had 26 shots which is 2 shots less than the normal 28 they take, so it's certainly not the quantity of shots but potentially the quality of shots the Leafs are allowing (not sure what the high danger #s were last night)

- for the record, Holl is not better than Sandin or Lilybust. I'd rather have Muzzin play with either of those two than (frank)ing Holl. And yes, I'd rather those two play together than with Holl.

- I think the Leafs lack of commitment and compete across all lines was obvious and the rookies shouldn't be the only ones centered out

- Not sure why, but the Leafs have made a habit of jumping ahead by a few goals and then sitting back in cruise control and trying to coast their way to victory of late. This needs to stop.

- Keefe is right: the Leafs are (frank)ing soft. They haven't addressed this element yet and I don't think it's something you can just coach into existence. This team needs some grit and players who will embarrass others by their relentless compete level. Not sure who those pieces may be, or if they even exist, but gosh darnit, we need that type of player(zzzz).

Dermott and Biega had the easier matchups and gave up more but the forwards were awful after the first. They were mostly one and done with no forecheck, the play came back way too soon and they left guys uncovered. It was pretty much team wide.

AZ holds the cards. They don’t need to trade him. Also they will point out, correctly his # going forward is a steal @ 4.6

So figure - 1st probably want top 15 / current quality player / top prospect.

Provided they can actually afford his salary. That organization is in big trouble. His salray might be lease money

Robertson is a top prospect, period.

You can make anyone sound bad. “Chychrun has 8 points this year and hasn’t been close to the top pairing he was last year, why would anyone pay a premium for him?”

Chychrun is an elite young D.

Robertson is a top prospect.

Keefe said a bunch of things about how they played last night but everyone jumps on the word soft like Viagara salesmen at a retirement home. They played an attacking game in the first and then went limp and had a nap. He wasn’t characterizing the team in general that way.

Really like Chychrun, also like Crouse but the cost is the issue. Arizona has 3 first in this draft, so draft picks are not goint to get it done. What do the Leafs really have to make a trade work? Nylander plus might do it, but do you give up one of your most consistent players over the past year to do it. Maybe - I don't know, Zezel would be pissed.
- winsix

Nylander is on pace to have more points this season than any player in history in Arizona. Let's not underrate him. They ain't getting him +.

Yeah Nylander is the second best player on the team, he's going nowhere. People will overreact while the Leafs win 8 of the next 10 games.

For maybe The first time last night, I wonder, the team as currently constructed, I just don’t see doing much in the playoffs against teams that can match the top two lines talent wise. The “it” factor just doesn’t seem to be there throughout the lineup. Whatever it is…

They need an Adam Graves kinda guy up front. A Travis Moen 3rd liner. And a hammer on the backend…

And nothing was done after Trouba trucked Riley is weak… Legal hit or not. That Hass to be answered.

Just as an example, Shatty was really appreciative for DiLo stepping up against MacDermid last night… that goes a long way in the room.

Let's Hope Chychrun just isn't overrated like OEL was for years in the desert. Players in those worthless markets get so overated.
