They're also the 6th most valuable NHL franchise according to Forbes:

They aren't selling the Flyers. Comcast's strategy is to vertically integrate content (Flyers are this), in-person experience, and distribution. It's worth way more to them as an integrated part of the value chain than any individual investor group could justify. Mediocre performance of one property isn't going to change their long-term strategy on this. Flyers are a small piece of their overall strategy.

What you are essentially saying, I think, is that Comcast may internally value Flyers more than what the market values it at, because of hidden synergies (such as say, their game broadcasts dovetailing into their next cable programming, # of subscribers who are sticking with Comcast for their Flyers programming, and so on), each of which brings revenue that may for accounting purposes end up outside the Flyers part of their balance sheet ...

But Comcast should be able to sell the Flyers and have the sale be contingent on attaining monopoly rights to content distribution. Thus preserving the same synergies post-sale?

I am looking at this with some bewilderment. They had a loss of 48m, and their franchise value shot up 50%?

The only reason I can think of is the ESPN+ new deal.

So Jake is back in the lineup tonight? As I said before, I hope he fails miserably against his former team tonight! WAs able to watch some of the Laffs/Rags game last night on TNT. I was so envious of those teams' fans. Those two teams are so much more fun to watch than.....well, you know. Why can't we have nice things?

You may know more about this than I do, so I will take your word for it. I only have macro level understandings of such things.

Eh, I don't know their internal conversations so I'm just guessing like the rest of us. We both agree, though, that the Flyers are just a tiny piece of their portfolio. Should they find themselves in need of a decent chunk of cash, though, it would be attractive to buyers.

The Pens sold for $900M. That boosted values across the league.

I honestly had to look up Savoie.

Here is what Pronman said about him yesterday (I know high high an esteem many of you hold him in)

8. Matt Savoie, C, Winnipeg (WHL)

Jan. 1, 2004 | 5′ 9.0″ | 179 pounds

Oct. 2021 Ranking: 7

Tier: Projected bubble top and middle of the lineup player

Skating: Above NHL average
Puck skills: NHL average
Hockey sense: Above NHL average
Compete: Above NHL average
Shot: Above NHL average

Background: Savoie has been one of the top players in the WHL as a 17-year-old, helping to lead Winnipeg to the top of the standings. He was a point/game in the USHL as a 16-year-old. Savoie was the top pick in his WHL Bantam Draft after applying for and being denied exceptional status to play at the age of 15. He played at the U17 Challenge for Canada as a 15-year-old and was a top player.

Analysis: It’s not a novel take to say that a leading CHL scorer as a first-year draft eligible in Savoie is a very talented scorer. He stands out with the puck on his stick and can attack in a variety of ways. Savoie is an excellent passer who can hit seams at a high rate and make tough plays under duress. He has very good hands to maneuver in traffic. He has good speed to beat opponents wide and he has a shot that can score from range. Savoie lacks ideal NHL size, but he competes hard and wins a surprising amount of battles for his size. He doesn’t have incredible speed and skill for a 5-foot-9 player so he may be moved to the wing in the NHL, but regardless I see him as a very good top six forward.

sounds good, but id like someone with a little size that can win some board battles. The issue is usually they arent as fast or shifty, but there is a need for both. Watching TK, and Frost losing board battles constantly i have recency bias. And by the time this kid would play, we could have Foerster, Wisdom and Desnoyer winning some board battles for us. Oh and Ratcliffe

Yeah we are on different page with this one. They can compete with anyone tight now and think a few pieces could make them legit Cup contenders. Trading a 20-30 spot 1st rd pick...Kratsov and maybe Chytil or Lundqvist for what they need wont hurt them. They also have two 2nds
- hfc355

I think panarins window is now, they should trade picks to complement and go for it. They have 2 kids that wont even peak until Panarin is on his down slide. They dont need picks who may or may not turn out.

What atibus was saying though affects our musings... the losses to Comcast, once you factor in those complementary effects, may be much larger than those figures I was bandying about....

Thanks.

After reading this, I looked at Forbes valuations for 2020, and Pens were valued at 650m, but sold for 900m.

Which means two things; 1. You are almost certainly right and 2. Market valuations of these teams are ridiculously off the mark.

I do.

I have tried changing multiple times. But if I downgrade cable to just high speed Internet access from Comcast (which is my only choice), then the rate Comcast will give me for the former is so high that adding a streaming service to it would actually increase my total bill.

If there is a way out of this ridiculous situation, I would be grateful to learn wtf it is.

There are a lot of smallish, fastish, high skilled players now playing center. But he is on the small end of even that spectrum. That his puck handling is only average scares me. So is the fact that his median projection is middle 6 (bubble top line)

Having said all that, I don't really know/understand what qualities of a player translate/survive/can be augmented from juniors to pro.

Bob Mackenzie released his mid season draft list as well. @ tsn.ca. Says a lot of the same things. Draft is below average by a lot of accounts, but as many scouts are pointing out that may have a lot to do with the lack of games a lot of guys have played in the last 18 months….as well scouts have not been able to travel as freely so it’s probably fair to assume.
Savoie plays with Connor McClennon a Flyer draft pick, who last time I looked was leading the WHL in goals.
