A first and a prospect from a team G is willing to go to works for me. Hopefully the prospect is top level. Even if it is not I think gaining the additional assets is the goal.

Giroux holds the cards but the teams he would likely waive for have assets the Flyers can use.

Avs make a lot of sense to me.

G for a first and Newhook or Jost?

- mickel25

You won’t get Newhook but a guy like Jost is intriguing. Maybe more ice time in a new role he flourishes.

What will Giroux's prorated cap hit be at the deadline?
- MBFlyerfan

I don't know that off hand. That would have to be computed manually. It would be 8.25M divided by the number of days in the season, then times the number of days left in the season at the deadline.

You are acting like you are trading Giroux two years ago with a couple years left on his deal.
- ClaudeFather

A few deals in the last 3 TDL for guys with expiring contracts.

1)Devils trade Blake Coleman to Lightning.

For Nolan Foote and a 1rst

2)Sharks trade Barclays Goodrow and a 3rd to lightning for a 1rst and Anthony Greco.

3)blue jackets trade Nick Foligno to the Leafs for a 1rst and a 4th…..the Jackets retain 1/2 of his remaining salary.

These are just a few….but in every case G is obviously far more valuable then any of these guys….balls in G’s court.

Didn’t both Coleman and goodrow have term left? I’m not denying we can get a decent return for G but SSB stated a Carter/Richards like return which is ridiculous. A franchise center he said.

Correct. There are 200 days this season because of the Olympics. There are always 41 days between TDL and end of season.

So, [(8.25)/200]*41

The best thing for the flyers would be if a team loses a player like Backstrom to injury, then G would be very appealing. A team couple play him at wing, or center. He would be very valuable. I could totally see him going to the pens. But not sure they have anyone i would want. Maybe Friedman.

I thought it goes by games not days. So if G had half his games left, he would have half his contract left....but i'm not 100% sure

I don’t believe so…but could be wrong.

A home run would be what the Rangers got for Rick Nash …I’m pretty sure it was an expiring….I know it was his last season…he only played 11 regular season games,

Bruins get Rick Nash.

Rangers get :

D Ryan Lindgren
F Ryan Spooner
FMatt Belesky
2018 1rst rnd pick.
2019 7th rnd

Similar is Nash to G, as far as players and age at the time….Nash was 33.

Edit: actually G is far more productive the Nash was in his last few years.

Will that change now that they'll be using some of the previously unscheduled days?

If these guys did have term…it wasn’t much as both moved on as UFA’s last summer.

So his deadline cap hit will be $1,691,250 if my math is correct.

I agree with this. You don’t take any offer. You set your price regardless of the # teams involved. If there’s more then one team involved that meets the price you may privately go to the player and ask his preference…he’s earned that.
- landros 2

and if the price doesnt get hit, what then?

im not just crapping on him here. I think people who think he isnt worth at least a first and some extra are out to lunch, but that extra isnt going to be a top flight young center waiting in the wings to be the franchise front line guy. The flyers are going to have to draft that.

I don't think so. The total length of season is # of days between start to finish (inclusive). The density of days across that span of time does not matter.

I will however defer to MJL on this one. I casually read up on this stuff before season started, but may misremember.

Why go into all that? The cap space reported by places like Cap Friendly, if I understand correctly, already factors in such calculations. If they say a team has 2 mil cap space, that would be 2 million of the full year salary it can take on, as MJL has been telling JD250.

For some team to take on Giroux salary without retention or salary coming back, their projected cap space at TDL would need to be his AAV.

I think it’s asinine to take what you can get. It sets a very bad precedent. I don’t think a late round pick is an over ask at all. There are a few team that G could really fill a need. If the deal doesn’t help the Flyers…then you don’t make the deal.

Before there were good cap sites, you had to do the math yourself. No need to now. CapFriendly does it all for you.

What deal that includes futures would not help the Flyers? I get that you wouldn't want a 4th straight up for Giroux. However, if you are moving on you are moving on. Get something.

For the record, a first and some sort of prospect seems very realistic for G with 50% retained. I do not envision a scenario where they would need to settle for a terrible return. This assumes G is willing to waive his NMC to complete a trade.

In some deals an expiring contract is more valuable then one with term. Some teams specifically want a guy on expiring contract. They can sort of “date” the player rather then entering a “marriage”. G is a perfect Rental for a team like the Rangers or Bruins…if it works out then you can sign him. It was like the Foligno to TO deal. It didn’t really work so Foligno signed in Boston…TO was happy I’m sure he didn’t have term.

I am glad it made sense to you. I meant, ofc, the density of games across that time, not the density of days across that time as I wrote (the latter being immutably fixed by God, not Bettman).
