That Ellis deal didn’t help out the Flyers at all. Actually it helped the Preds - they aren’t missing the glass man at all.
- RustyPipes

Of course, because the Flyers knew Ellis would get hurt and miss a significant amount of time. Myers and Cody Glass are tearing it up for the Preds! It is a shame Ellis is hurt but we took a risk and it hasn't worked out so far. It's not like we gave up much. I'd do that trade any day of the week (Myers and Patrick) for Ellis. I just don't get why people are still complaining about this.

I have a hard time seeing this team getting some cap space and not using it. You know they aren't going to sit back. They'll dive into free agency if they can to take another "run" at it. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Conversely they sat on cap side as recently as two years ago

I just don't get that why some people don't get that this deal is not just about Myers and Patrick. They acquired a player with 6 more years left on his deal who is injury prone. Why do you think they were able to get him for Myers and Patrick. For when healthy, a bona fide top pairing RH defenseman? Why did Nashville make that deal?

Didn't see the game cause, well you know, Comcast doesn't broadcast Flyers games despite owning them. Expected to see the game on tonight and I saw Mikey Miss's ugly face instead. Anyway, I'm only going by stats. I noticed that basically the bottom 6 forwards dressing for this team aren't NHL level forwards. Frost was 5 for 8 on faceoffs with 1 hit and 2 giveaways, and he was -1 on the night. Looks like another stellar night for him. I saw a highlight of the second Isle goal and York looked very timid going into the corner to get that puck. Perhaps he was tired and at the end of the shift? Losing teams find a way to lose. It seems that the Flyers have at least been competitive lately, but when you go into every game expecting to lose that's exactly what you do.

On a positive note, the Flyers have Coots signed for EIGHT more years!!! Yippee!!!

Comcast bid on the national contract but bettman decided to award to a network that decided to not televise the games unless you pay for Hulu or ESPN +. Espn is great for corn hole ar 2 am. That’s about to.

Fletcher took over the team and they evaluated. They didn't waste time spending it.

How much cap room did it cost? That’s the complaint!

They made the deal cause they unloaded a contract and prob concerned about injury history. They are also a dman factory there and have youth which were ready.

Flyers took a risk on a right handed all situations dman to compensate for the fact that we have 0 dmen than can either be effective on the pp and or function on a number 1 pairing shutdown role.

We have absolutely, positively 0 number 1 pairing d men right now. 0.

York will be there.

What did they buy in the off-season two years ago? What big trades added salary two years ago.

It was all this off-season. Not saying I like his moves, but they sat on their hands two years ago.

It was not a very smart risk to take and I said so when the deal was made. At best the moves made would make the Flyers an improved playoff bubble team. This organizations approach as a whole across the board is dysfunctional.

It wasn't Hayes? They didn't sit on their hands. As soon as Fletcher could, he went on a spending spree of cap dollars and draft picks. Had to be an "action bias" GM.

Good night, bad hockey.

Totally understand about the risk due to age, contract, etc. I don't agree with all of the moves, but their goal was to make the playoffs and a healthy Ellis would have been a big part of making that goal possible. It was a risk but they really didn't have many other options and we needed to move on from Patrick. Patrick wasn't going to get us a top player in his prime. I do agree about dysfunctional...they need to come up with a plan and stick to it.

You give up draft picks and max the team out on the cap just to make the playoffs? That's the issue. Set your sights higher. You don't do what they did just to make the playoffs. Just to be an improved bubble team. They had plenty of other options.

I understand where you are coming from and agree with you to an extent. The Flyers mentality/goal was to improve the team and make the playoffs, which meant that they had to make some moves. On paper, the moves should have worked for what they were trying to accomplish. I'm a fan of Ellis and RR so I supported both moves (and still do). I like most want to see my team make the playoffs and hope for a decent run. It's unfortunate the way things worked out this season so far. As for the other options, what were the realistic ones to improve our Defense?

Ellis is a legit top pair RH defenseman who is injury prone with 5 more years remaining on his deal. Ristolainen is a mediocre 2nd pair defenseman that the Flyers overpaid for. They did this to make the playoffs? The realistic options were to keep their draft picks and not max the cap out and continue to draft and develop. Bring in some short term stop gap players if need be. Hopefully better than Yandle. I'm praying that the Flyers dump Ristolainen and get back whatever they can. That was a mjor mistake.
