Speaking of old time Philly restaurants. Does anyone remember Bookbinders?

Of course I remember Bookbinders. In the 90s, those places (Le Bec Fin, Susanna Foo, Le Deux Cheminee etc) were beyond my budget. But I have gone a few times.

Victor Cafe in Philly has apprentice opera singers serving as waitstaff. Every few minutes, someone rings a bell, and someone else sings an aria . Very old school philly, just streets away from where Mario Lanza grew up. Food is pretty decent, too, after some bad years.

With Covid, this has now become a neighborhood event, and you can just stop by and listen without paying.

Youre totally paying for the ambiance, which is great. Food is ok, a little bland. For the same price point, the Saloon is light years ahead. Ate at Victor around Halloween. Ate the Saloon turn back the clock weekend. Had the Veal mondalaise at both. It was like two completely different dishes.

Thats too harsh. From 2002/3 to 12/13 or so it was average to bad, but now it is back. A solid B+ to A-. Standard Italian American fare.

No, everything is preserved and intact. Including interior. Its called Olde Bar now. Some of the better streetside dining options (lots of space between tables, quiet block etc)
