who would have guessed a goalie that was given to you for future considerations wasn't going to cut it

Barring no changes to current roster with injury exception, what is management doing now to be prepared for the off season?

What identity did this roster create?

What role player(s) does this roster need?

Where are they looking/how many scouts are actually out looking vs watching YouTube highlights?

What current assets are tradable for upgrading the current roster w/o damaging the future?

- washedup20

I feel like some of these are rhetorical, but I'll offer my 2 pennies. (Below response is more like ten pennies)

As the article insists on above, Adams is trying to build a team, on and off the ice. He was part of that leadership group in Carolina and has seen a recipe for success. Of course you need talent, but I think it's important to have that strong team bond as well. Based on personal experience, I think it gives you that extra drive to go the extra yard for the guys you play with. Helps with the highs and lows.

As far as on ice identity, Granato continues to preach an aggressive attack regardless of mistakes. He knows the composition on this team, and most guys here need development, and refuses to employ a Krueger system.

Almost all of the UFAs could be sold here. I highly doubt 'most' of them are traded, maybe 3 at most, likely 2 of them before the TDL. The Amerks have a great team and it's becoming apparent that Adams prefers not to disrupt that and their developments.

You ask who can be traded to make this team better? That's a great questions. Their aim is to not use tradable assets for short term help. Risto, Reino, Jack, all used on futures except for Tuch. Free agency, if anything, will be the only thing helping this team short term. If he feels like it. Which I don't think he does. It's a true shame he won't make the effort to get a goalie. I'll be real disappointed if he can't find a short term, actual goalie by the start of next season. If you include all the RFAs and Rochester players, there's very little room for UFAs next season. I've been predicting that a few young players are traded to reshape the team for the better. One could only speculate who those guys will be, but I think there'll be one or two 'surprise' trades.

The scouting department has been increased and they are actually viewing games.

As far as role players? Grabbing a solid, shut down top 4 D would be great. Role players are a dime a dozen and I think the Sabres have a pretty decent bottom 6. Removing Eakin alone will be a boon for them. You're injecting a ton of skill and determination next year with Samuelsson, Power, Quinn, Peterka and Krebs. It'll be important to retain vets like Skinner, Okposo, Girgensons and Olofsson. Getting one more scorer for the top 9 would be very helpful too.

With the emergence of Peterka and Quinn, on top of the addition of Krebs, they have absolutely increased their lead on #1

Well said, I agree with Adams approach, he seems to be disciplined enough to see ideas through. It's a slow process but it's the right one and needed.

Does Gerbe know what the goalie plan is for next season?

He’s regressed since his breakout season 3 years ago. He’s ideally a third line player.

It’s never good to hear that your management team is shocked about where a player is at, especially at such a vital position while having organizational plans depending on that player but…there’s a drawing board so Terry doesn’t cheap out on supplies.

That's perfect.

There's a Neil Young channel (thru the holidays at least, I think) on Sirius XM, if you have it. He said he'd be playing stuff no one has ever heard before.

Nice piece about Levi

During every timeout, Levi drops to his knees between the faceoff circles 15 feet in front of his net, bows his head and uses breathing techniques to reset.

"Just clearing my mind, focusing on my breath, staying in the moment," he said. "It's real easy to get carried away with fans screaming at you, it's real easy to get into all the distracting things that don't apply to the game. So I just take a few moments to clear my head and remember what the important part of the moment is, going out and having fun and stopping pucks for my teammates."

Not sure if this was mentioned already, but I was reading the box score for the Amerk's last night and noticed Justin Kea was one of the refs. After a quick search I confirmed it is the ex-sabres prospect. I found an article about recently hired/promoted NHL/AHL officials and saw that another ex-prospect Jordan Samuels-Thomas was also hired.

Glad to see these guys finding another hockey career path but I also feel like they are only a few years removed from playing and surprised they are already ready to ref pro games. Officiating is a skill much different from playing, I know I could never do it well. Anyone can make calls from their recliner, but on the ice at that speed it's way different.

So I guess my question is for Stripes. Does the NHL encourage former players/prospects to get into officiating? What's your opinion on former players getting officiating opportunities that quickly vs non-player officials who have been working the college/minor league circuits? I would think the official who worked their way up through the officiating ranks would be more skilled?
