I like that Fabbri can play both C & W, but I think having RFA rights gives Kapanen a little more value in a trade. Pens are taking the risk of losing Fabbri for nothing.

Ah ok. I thought that's where was excelling at first for you guys. I'm trying to prepare for Carter either retiring or moving elsewhere. |

I think we DO need another McCann. We don't know what the future holds for Carter.

Kapanen's an enigma. - Thunderbolt
He really is and I think at times myself and others are too harsh on him. It's probably similar to the Simon-effect though.
Kapanen is playing probably the best all-around hockey of his career and his fancies will back that up. You see him active in all zones and truthfully he doesn't take a shift off, but the pucks aren't going in. (Simon-effect)
He's on pace for 46 points right now which is not shabby at all, but when you look at what he can do it SHOULD be more. He should be a perennial 20+ goal guy, but this is where the enigmatic part comes in. He has a good shot. It's not like he has hands of stone. |

That would be nice, but who knows what he wants to do. At the level he's playing at it's hard to imagine he retires unless he has other personal reasons for wanting to do so, but we really don't know where he'd like to finish his career if he continues. He could be Cullen 2.0, go to a team he thinks he has a better chance of winning one more or maybe he loves LA and wants to go back. |

I think the thing that affects Matheson's negative views are the following:
1) Contract
2) Old reputation
3) Lack of scoring
He's an offensive-minded dman, so you'd hope he's good for 5 to 10 goals year, but right now he's on pace for 3.
His contract stinks, 100%
Old reputation? IMO not as bad as people make it out to be. Yes, he turns the puck over, but no less than other players who play a more high-event style of hockey. The issue is he doesn't put up Letang-points when he tries to play a Letang-style of a game.
All that said, aside from the turnovers he's been playing some solid hockey and you're a advanced stats guy. If you go to NST, all his major stats are above average. He tracks as a 2nd pairing dman, but he doesn't have offensive numbers he should. He's basically become the Zucker/Kapanen of the Pens defense.
EDIT: According to NST he leads the Pens with 18 giveaways (1 ahead of Letang), but he also leads the team in takeaways with 15.
At the end of the day I don't think he's a bad dman at all. He's just not worth his contract. |

All the numbers indicate he's more than a 3rd pairing dman, but I still agree he's overpaid with bad term. If you forget about the contract, he's an OK #4 guy.

Thanks for the stats. That was the MO on Matheson when we first got him. Every time I watched him play for Florida I saw a great skater good on the battles. He likes to join the rush and will take his chances. He screams 2nd pairing D-man easily. And yes, he might make $1.5-2M more than we'd like to. |

He should have been a $3M dman signed to a four year contract at the most. If he brought more offensive production it would be a different story.
FLA jumped the gun on him and I don't remember what the team was like at the time, but maybe they felt they needed to overpay to keep guys. |

He was coming off a great campaign for Canada National team as the best defenseman on the team. He was getting at least $4M just like Marino and Pettersson got. To me he's worth $3.5-4M per year.

He's a solid 2nd/3rd line scoring wing. When he's on he can score some goals which we need. Maybe he'll pick up when Guentz cools off haha |
