only one elite no. 1 center, sidney crosby, played that pivotal if a role on stanley cup winning teams since the 04/05 lockout...he was a first overall...stammer had a big role, but not pivotal, in their second of two consecutive cup wins but only played one game in the the prior year...
eric staal was second overall
getz was 19th overall
pav was a 6th rounder
toews was third overall
kopitar 11th overall
bergeron 2nd round
backstrom fourth overall
ror 2nd round - Michael Pachla
Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Backstrom, Toews, Kane, Hedman, pietrangelo, doughty we’re all drafted where ?
How do you obtain a top 5 pick in the draft with the exception of lottery luck ?

As a follow up to this, how many times was Bill Zito passed over in our search for GM jobs ?
Obviously due to purposely losing in 2015 though right.
Same with trading ROR instead of Risto in 2018. Eichel, Reinhart, ROR, and Ehlers wouldn’t have won a thing because of the tank of 2015 probably. - Pegullaville
Not trying to say that the various Sabres’ GMs haven’t screwed the pooch, just saying that Zito may disagree with you on the importance of “culture”...
Before the organization can move forward, a new culture will soon be put on paper.
"We have the 100-percent rule -- are you giving 100 percent every single day?," Zito said. "In Columbus, we sat down with our leaders and came up with a value sheet, what we believe in. That's something I look forward to doing here. We will compete every day. As executives we will compete; scouts will compete. Everybody will compete all day, every day. Players will compete."
The talented Panthers were still spinning their wheels before Zito was hired.
Zito bringing in a guy like Hornqvist shows “culture” is important to him. The results are showing on the ice....
Edit, here’s more,
Wasting no time getting started down in Sunrise. Zito identified the biggest problem with the Panthers organization, the lack of culture. Before the NHL Free Agency period beginning, he gathered his staff to discuss his vision moving forward. “We need to address some type of support, communication, accountability. A paradigm shift from the staff, the management, and the organization; but also, needs to be an institutional mindset that players, not just the players, everybody needs to be treated like a family.”
Zito would continue saying, “It needs to be a habit in the way you play the game, and that’s what we’re looking for. We want people who compete, who will approach the game with a business-like, professional manner and every day come to the rink wanting to win.” https://lastwordonsports....nstructing-the-franchise/

No I don't, but isn't Mitts a player you want to grow with, isn't Dahlin a player you want to grow with. - Buff36
Absolutely Yes is the answer.
However, if they can't be that player who gives 120% on the ice, then No is the answer. It is a cancer that needs to be cut out and thrown out, right. Disappointing yes, but take desive action, the rest of the roster will appreciate it.
gotta start trying to win very soon...no later than next season...
they're tightrope walking...personally, based upon these owners, odds are that they fall...which gives me an opportunity to post one of the greatest songs about the depths of a relationship split quite possibly in the history of song

Those arguments that he was a cancer are starting to show some giant holes. - sbroads24
Are they?
Or is it the reality that Eichel is an elite player whose skill set is hugely missed, but his cancerous "leadership" is gladly departed.
C'mon man.

Adams talked all offseason about culture and bringing in people that want to be here, but we suck.
Why ? Lack of talent.
If you want to believe all of that other fluff then by all means.
Hornqvist, Verhagee, Reinhart are all great hockey players.
Weegar, Ekblad, huberdeau should all make team Canada.
Barkov is a top 10 player in the league. That’s why you’re good.

"Yet you can build a half decent team, and without an elite 1C, you won’t win a cup regardless."
that is what you wrote...
ovi's a winger, backstrom was selected 11th overall, toews 3rd overall from team that finished third-last, kane from a team that finished fifth-last, hedman, pietrangelo and doughty are all d-men
