I think the last part of this season is going to be about how well DD is as helping young kids develop at the NHL level. If they are going full sale, gonna end up with a lot of unexperienced players fairly soon, so might as well see if DD can handle that now.

If not, get someone who can.

And my guess is, they are gonna clean house in a massive way over the next 2-3 years.

Why make a chance before a new GM is on board and the direction they want to take finalized (which I am sure has pretty much already been decided), before getting a coach that agrees with the plan and can coach to it?
