There were some questions but he never dropped further than #2, so apparently they weren't serious enough to knock him down any further than #2.
The Flyers had pretty much no choice but to pick him and really had no reason to trade out of the pick. - Tomahawk
Disagree. Look who was on the roster at the time. Enhance that roster by trading to supplement those players.

Never dropped below # 2 on who’s list? Of course they had a choice. They just made the wrong one. As Bill himself pointed out there were enough questions about him in their own draft room. It’s Shiite, but they simply made a mistake. |

I don't know if you can say they had no choice. Look back at the 2012 draft. Wasn't Seth Jones projected to be the number two pick and Florida decided to go with Barkov.
I always hear defenseman are hard to find, so i just wonder what put Patrick ahead of Maker and Hiskenan. - J35Bacher
It wasn't just Patrick ahead of the dmen. IIRC there were several forwards (Vilardi, Mittelstadt, Glass, etc) that many lists had before either dman too.
Edit: just looked it up and Central Scouting didn't even have Miro as their #1 Euro skater lol. Makar was #9 ranked NA player.

Let's see. Hmmm. How about Hart, Sanheim, Konecny, Provorov, and Farabee? Frost and Big Red look like they can play. If you need help, that makes 7. Lindblom would be 8. Also, we are out of salary-cap hell. It was pretty broke when he got it. That goes a long way towards fixing it. - iamscore2day

This might be the best take on the whole Hextall\Fletcher conundrum. |

I recall reading this after he was drafted. To me this would have been a huge waving red flag.

I’m sure glad I’m a Flyers fan because in your world we are the only team that drafted kids that made it to the NHL in those 5 years. (regardless of quality) As far as cap hell…that’s what happens when contracts end…you don’t have to pay them any longer. So he moved out a few bad contracts …big deal. I never said he got every thing wrong…just enough to get fired. |

I read the same stuff the week of the draft. I also know full well of the detractors and what they were saying. I honestly had only seen him play 5-6 times. I also hoped that they got it right. It’s pretty obvious they didn’t. |

I understand. I just think at the time of the draft things were closer then before.
Damn the Jay O'Brien is a pick I would love to know why he was taken before Miller. Especially since they took Farabee already

It was a high risk high reward. Like I said before, as a 16 year old he was the best 16 year old in the world. |

So just looking at next year, without trades or anything, the Flyers lose
Giroux
Brassard
Thompson
Bruan
Yandle
Seeler
Ristolainen
Jones
So that's like 14mil if you do nothing.
They have all their picks but the 2nd rounder.
Frost,MacEwan and Allison are RFAs and i don't see them getting big money.
So are we maybe jumping the gun on this the "Flyers are in roster hell" thing a little early?
To me this looks like a team, if still struggling at the trade deadline has pieces to move and some things they can do then and in the offseason.

There is only 1 way Risto leaves. If CF leaves before that.
I expect a 5 for 5 deal.

If he stayed I wouldn't be against that. I am not such a risto hater. I think he brings something this team needs and doesn't have in the system anywhere.
Sanheim is the one on that pair that I can't figure out. i feel like he should produce more and just be bringing more to the game. |

The contract will kick in But when will Couts? He definitely has checked out. Trade all and keep Farabee, Frost Atkinson, |
|
|

Has anyone started a "dead pool" yet for firings and trades?
CF fired date
AV fire date
Yeo fire date
Therrien fire date
Player TBD trade date
etc etc etc
earth opens up and swallows the Comcast building and Scott date (UFO intervention also allowed) date
Thats what this all really boils down to |

So AV wasn't fired today I suppose? Coots isn't the best skater, but he has looked particularly slow lately. Gotta wonder if he is playing with a nagging injury that he always seems to have. |

I can see the "he brings something we don't have" bit. I just don't get the "he brings something we need" bit.
The team is largely the same as last year, except the Myers+Hagg/Risto+Seeler swap. Are the results that different?
Look at teams that have developed very good defences in the recent past. Canes, Preds... do they have anyone like that?
He has been better than I thought he would be. But that is mostly a result of low expectations.
