Based on his last game, clearly a sleeper agent
- Canada Cup

So when does this Russian/KHL free agent pipeline end?

Zaitsev - Gone (Though he got (frank)ing paid so?)
Oz - Gone
Sosh - Gone
Barabanov - Gone
Semyonov - Gone
Lehtonen - Gone (traded)
Mikheyev - Asked for trade

The whole top 40 Leaf prospect list is messed up now. We need to redo
all 40 blogs now.

- WendelClark82

I don’t get why anyone would do top 40 anyways. It’s maybe too 5-10 that have a shot at an nhl career.

If Kadri was having this season in Toronto all we'd hear is cap hell and he's leaving and Leafs are screwed.
- RogerRoeper

According to popular belief in this thread, the Avs have to trade him now or he’s going to walk and they’ll get nothing.

Or does that only apply to the Leafs?

He throws right.

Can he play RHD with Muzzin?

The good news is that literally anyone is an upgrade to Muzzin's right side.

Unlike the Leafs the past half dozen years or so, Avs have and have had a REAL shot to win the last 3 (def 2) years.

Also, I don't know their Cap situation, if would be contingent on that as well.

Cause we have cap issues and we are in Toronto. Hence why they would be talking about the leafs.
Do you read or listen to colorado media? Do you know what theyre saying? Nope?
The play by play guy from the avs was on Toronto radio today and mentioned Kadri could walk as a result of his new contract as the avs have mac who will cost double.

Nice attempt though, you'll get there.

From what I understand there is no way that they can pay him so he’ll probably walk. The Avs performance against Vegas last year doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. It seems like every year MacKinnon pads his stats in blowout games and then goes quietly into the night.

What makes them a more legitimate contender than the Leafs based on cited criteria? They haven't made it out out of the second round since 2010. They've had 3 straight 2nd round exits. In the past three years they swept a weak Blues team before losing to Vegas; they beat Arizona in 5 before losing to Dallas, and they beat the Flames in 5 (looking legitimately awesome in that series in the bubble) before losing to San Jose.

Basically Colorado is another team like the Leafs - high octane offense, offensive D with little defensive acumen to support them and unheralded goaltending. They've had consistently early exits from the playoffs.

The difference? Toronto has made adjustments to the team D concept, and tried to add some edge toughness around their core.

Colorado replaced Grubauer with Kuemper and have let their youth develop. Don't get me wrong, I really like Girard, Byram and of course Makar - but none of them are going to be confused with physical players.

That said, Kadri is finally playing like the guy they wanted - someone who can make their second line legitimately dangerous.

I am not saying Colorado is not an amazing team, but I am saying that they have proven nothing more than the Leafs have - but Leafs get poop on and the Avalanche get accolades up the ying yang.

Agree, MacK concerns me in his playoff performances so far. I think he gets it this year.

Hoping the same for our M&Ms this year too.

They’re very similar teams but the Avs always get a free pass from the Canadian media. I think the leafs had a much better off season though.

With MacKinnon back, Kadri's numbers will drop as will his ice time..

Yes, this was a perfect storm for Kadri in his contract year. Good for him though.

Exactly.. If that happened here, TSN would say we can't afford his next contract and should trade him for picks and prospects

Not sure how a 27-year old career KHL player was a prospect in the first place.
- mjones242

Whatever tool they are using to predict future success needs to be tweaked. Semyonov was on a team with Reid Boucher last year - Semyonov played more games and had half the points. Boucher was a former 4th rd pick who literally defines tweener: He dominated the AHL and sucked at the NHL. So off to the KHL he went, where he was very good - but we already know he's not a regular NHL calibre player.

When evaluating guys from the K, I think you have to liken it to the AHL and then look at the quality of their linemates. For example in Mikheyev's last year, he played in Omsk - he had guys on his team like Franson, Desharnais and Medvedev - all of whom had at least had more than cup of coffee on an NHL roster (well, Medvedev was probably a half-caf demitasse, but anyway) and he did out produce them. If you're going to give a shot to guy, make him at least comparable to someone you know CAN play at this level.

I thought Semyonov looked good in the preseason at times, but largely non-competitive in his few games in the season.

While I don't disagree with the obvious statistical facts, I believe you overlook the psychological difference. It's a big one in sports. (and winning just one round is doing BETTER than the Leafs btw, just not having a epic collapse when leading is BETTER than the Leafs. )

The Leafs have been fighting that first round Demon for years. To a debilitating degree. And the untimely injuries have exacerbated the mental even more. Very hard to succeed.

The Avs have made the playoffs and WON a few rounds. Nothing mental just parity, consistency and/or hockey gods so they don't really have any mental stigma to overcome.

If Leafs were to get passed the 1st round and shook that monkey off their backs, they would be lights out with confidence going forward...me thinks.

So a bit of a different problem and an obvious difference in success thus far.
