ok you're acting as though it's unheard of for a GM to report to anyone but the owner. lots of teams have structures where there is an executive between the owner and the GM. and since it's a given that the Habs will be hiring someone with no NHL GM experience, yeah i think they'll be fine with that structure.
i know what Molson is saying today, but sorry, i just don't envision a scenario where Jeff Gorton signed on to co-manage with a guy who was running sales and marketing for a customs brokerage 3 years ago. - DoubleDown
where the f do you get that from?!? I know very well that usually the gm report to the president, and the president report to the owner.
Molson does something different today. like it or not. will it work? time will tell. |

a french native requirement on the job will limit the habs so hopefully they don't close the door to great options - twiztedmike

no.
ever since the great napoleon bonaparte humanity has been blessed with many great french savants and to look upon any other language speaker would be a fools errand in the search for a new GM for les mighty habs glorieux |

Putting limits on a pool of candidates limits your options? Who knew? |

Nothing we can do about it |

I agree with you...I've just learned to accept it. Only time I argue it is if somebody tries to claim it doesn't hurt them. That's just blind and willful ignorance |

This IMO is going to be similar to the Raptors setup. Masai Ujiri President of Ops and Webster GM. I would think Gorton will review and approve any major decisions like hiring/firing, contracts, trades and top draft picks but the GM will make lesser decisions like sending guys down, lower draft round selections and waiver wire stuff.. |

But did it?
Seems he got what he saw as the best available GM, who happens to be English speaking.
Does not really matter who the GM is now, Gorton is gonna run the show for the next 2+ years, while whomever they name GM will just execute on what he is told to do, and if he proves to be remotely competent, will get more responsibility. |

I'm happier about the Gorton hire than I expected simply because he doesn't meet the french criteria which likely means he was such a good candidate they didn't care. Great. That's how you should hire.
Now they insist GM will speak french, thus limiting the pool to the maybe 10% give or take of candidates for the position. Bad. That's not how you should hire.
Two steps forward, one step back. My point was simply anybody arguing in favour of the language requirements doesn't have much of a leg to stand on in arguing it doesn't negatively impact the quality of candidates they bring in. It's nearly impossible to argue without being disingenuous |

but chances are they'll find someone just as competent in that French speaking 10%... so I really don't find that saying it doesn’t hurt the team all that much in the end is disingenuous.

I'm curious to see what would be your top5 candidates. who are we missing out on exactly? someone posted a list last spring, honestly I didn't know any of them. and none were better candidates (imo) than the top3 french speaking guys.
Gorton was a good candidate. they hired him. who else? |

I agree with what you are saying.
Just noting Molson made it not matter what language(s) the real person in charge spoke.
So really, let's just all walk away happy and stop (frank)ing talking about this stupid language poop and focus on hockey. |

If that's your belief on how chances work you should never get involved in gambling. I got you to agree on the math part yesterday, let's just let this sleeping dog lie |
