The Gorton hire was a good hire. - Takemedrunkimhome
Yeah, I think so as well.
Solid background in asset management, player development. Seems pretty good on the trade front too.
That is gonna be key to get us out of the mess we are in. |

meh, personally I wouldn't have the language limitations in place, as I don't care what language they speak, I just find you're portraying the situation as having this huge negative impact on the organization, while it really isn't disastrous at all, and it isn't crazy to assume that they can find someone of similar competence among the francophones - Pat1993
Well we did have Rejean (frank)ing houle as a DG...so maybe our ontario friend as a point ! |

I remember some canadian teams who had Brian Burke as a GM and or President and they could pick the best candidate with no language barrier |

Well, no losses, bad trade, horrible draft picks yet.
I am sure we will want to burn it all down again in 3 weeks. |

I think he escapes most judgement until at earliest trade deadline but most likely until after free agency. Either way one thing is for sure, sooner or later we will want to burn it all down again |

a french native requirement on the job will limit the habs so hopefully they don't close the door to great options - twiztedmike
I don't think we care about French "native". Guys like Bob Gainey, Larry Robinson, Ken Dryden had the courtesy of learning French, I think it would be nice if today's people could follow suit instead of being just lazy (frank)s. |

in this specific context of finding a GM, just because you have 10 times more people that don't speak French it doesn't mean you're 10 times more likely to find someone more competent from that group... but yeah ice cream time - Pat1993

Yeah, for me, I think I will look more critically at what he has done by the opening day lineup next year.
Between trade deadline, the draft, free agency and the rest of the summer to sort out the roster, I think we will have a very clear picture of what he intends to do with the team.
I may be in favour or against individual transaction, etc... Til next Oct. But it will be hard to guage in the vacuum of any transaction alone. |

Yeah, I don't really think it's about being lazy (frank)s, it's probably more about being able to live in Montréal without really having to learn the plebs' language. Like mister Michael Roussow from Air Canada. |

I'm not as concerned with the opening day roster being "good" as it making sense from a long term perspective but lore or less the same |

Pretty sure the Natives have a bigger axe to grind on this issue. |

I'd go into why Montreal struggles with free agents but I'd rather ask, why does it matter if he speaks french? It's his life. He is the one who will likely encounter challenges due to the language barrier and he seems willing to accept that, why is that so offensive? |

For the most part pro players are guys who've known since before they graduated high school that they'd likely be multimillionaires. I've known a few pro players that are below 40 (don't want to speak on other generations) and they weren't the book learnin' type |
