all things considered, it's amazing he made it anywhere near as far as he did.

what a great man.

The answer to this will be obvious at the end of his 5-year plan.
- Mashadar

I'm sure it is now forbidden by the organization to use those words lol...

fun fact, I think stinger had brought this up, but Bergevin never actually talked about a "5-year plan" during his tenure, that was from the Gauthier era, and for some reason it stuck for a lot of fans and media.

thing is though he won't be acting as GM, so I'm not quite sure he'll be taking all those decisions by himself...
- Pat1993

The org structure example I can think of, which the Habs might be looking to as an example, is Gorton is like Shanahan - creating the overarching strategy and making all the big decisions for the first year or two, before letting others slowly take over.

I don't think you bring in Gorton to be at the top of the food chain so he can be a passive member of the decision making process.

Hiring of Gorton to fire (or let go…) Bergevin is another proof of lack of leadership and courage of Molson…

Anyway, Bergevin era is over and now Gorton will find a new French speaking GM(like it or not…) and the big cleanup will start before the trade deadline and will continue next summer…

Gorton is not afraid of selling assets and tanking… and it is the right thing to do…

Amen

oh of course not, but perhaps he'd be collaborating with the new GM to make these decisions, depending on how exactly they're defining their roles within the organization.

Oh I know, but as the person who oversees everything he can tell the gm which direction to go. Patchwork or rebuild.

Lol. As long as it's not a ten year plan. I really like this hiring. Can't wait for trade deadline

while I'm not completely against this option since I do understand its merits, I just hope it won't mean they'll be consistently losing and rotting at the bottom of the standings for the next 10 years...

6 wins is 23 games is not winning.

Very hard to be worse, I am sure it can be done, but does it make a difference?

I just want poop to be exciting again, whether that is the draft, watching prospects develop, competing hard every game, and eventually, winning more games than losing.

This whole cycle of "we just need to to be good enough to make the playoffs, and you never know" crap is depressing because most of the time they do not even make the playoffs to begin with.

I think so. If you look at his body of work you would think that what he was brought in to do

I get all that. I do hope they get it right though if they go that route, because it also seems fairly easy to get stuck as a team in a perpetual losing mindset, without being able to get out of it. there are no guarantees in the NHL, especially when it comes to drafting and rebuilding/tanking...

Drafting and player development, for sure.

He needs to:

1/ Get back a 1st.and 2nd the Habs wasted on Dvorak (whether by trading him or not, IDC).

2/ Maximize return on all expiring contracts

3/ Use the stupid amount of LITR cap space to take on bad contracts that have 1 or 2 years left, and getting rewarded with picks / prospects. Buy out any that have no use in the summer

Then turn this summer's draft in Montreal into a party and make as fun and exciting as this season should have been.

Rinse and repeat the next year.

Its doesn't guarantee success but it's the plan with the highest probability of bringing success. It would also be nice to try something different and not keep repeating the same plan expecting a different result. Cup teams are built through the draft, that's not even debatable. It's not the seventies anymore.

I guess I am saying this team is already in a perpetual losing mindset, and has been for 30+ years.

hard to argue that the draft isn't the main key to success... kinda makes you look in Trevor's direction and wonder how the (frank) he was able to be there for so long.

Molson to home depot cashier.

"Are you French?"
"Yes"
"Good public speaker?"
"I gave a pretty good speech at my sister's wedding."
"Want to be my gm?"
"I don't follow hockey,"
"Perfect! Just do everything Gorton tells you to do."

French gm problem solved.
