As satisfying as last night's win was, it's not a sustainable model over a regular season. Just look at the ice times for each player. 6 forwards played less than 12 minutes, and 3 played over 25 minutes.

Seth Jones played 31 minutes, Murphy had 28, and Gus played 8 minutes. And then Fleury had to stop 95% of the 44 shots faced.

And given how few minutes the bottom 6 forwards played, that appears to be where the Penguins capitalized, looking at the plus/minus column.

Getting Kalnyuk back in place of Gus should help the minute imbalance somewhat for the D's. Getting Hagel back will help, also. And Tyler Johnson.

All this talk about 2010, remember that that team rolled four lines.

Which is nice, but not a recipe for long term success. The game against NSH was good D. This one was not.

The 3rd period they became a bit unglued, i liked their d because they were protecting the house limiting second chance opportunities, so many sticks on sticks so shooters had a tough time following through or elevating the puck. To me it's not a coincidence with all those shots the 2 that go in are the 2 where there's no defender between the goalie and the shooter.

Just like the goal against vs Preds

Wonder who gets the nod on Friday after both posted goalie wins.

Also, heard Pat talking about the game not being on TV. Looked at the broadcast schedule and saw ESPN+/Hulu. That brings us back to the old days of listening on WBBM if you don't have either.

Baffling that he’s getting first unit time while Dach and Kubalik sit on the bench.

With the team that the Hawks trotted out last night, they would of been blown out. We saw what happens when you play Gus 15 minutes a night, Reese Johnson played 5 minutes plus, that is 5 minutes plus more than he should.

What did King say when he took over. He is not afraid to take ice time away from players that don't deserve to play. This isn't little league and everyone has to play a certain number of innings. If the Hawks have any chance of sniffing a playoff spot, they need to win now, not save the players for the last 30 games of the season.

They also have 3 days off before the next game, not like they are playing back to back or 3 games in 4 nights.

The 1st 2 periods were pretty even, the 3rd was an absolute horror show.

Good goaltending covers a multitude of problems.

The imbalance of ice time shows that there were a number of skaters dressed that aren't ready for the NHL, especially Gus. The good news is that are more than a few players, either injured or in Rockford that can contribute, and will help balance the ice time.

The fact that the new coach looks like Walter White is an added bonus.

Bad coaching and having a roster with bad players is not mutually exclusive. Both can occur simultaneously.

Opportunity to go 3 in a row on Friday. Let's see how they do against a team they should beat, especially at the UC.

This team need to learn how to play 60 minutes. At what point do we question their conditioning? At least they've come out ready to play under King, but they were dead by the 3rd period, which has been a problem all season. If we didn't have Kane we would be worse than the Coyotes.

Agree with everything you say here. Just saying the model is not sustainable in the present form. The good news is some injured and protocol players will be coming back in the near term, so we probably won't see too many more of these stat lines.

Gus was meant to fill in for the D's who are injured, and to give a little more time for the prospects to develop. Rees Johnson and Hardman, similar story. They are not ready to call up Nylander. And Connolly can't be recalled because there isn't enough cap space right now.

Hopefully they don't need this lopsided a distribution against the Yotes.

No shame in having your goalie help you steal a win. Teams have stolen games from us more than once this season and that's how the game goes sometimes.

Jones played a lot of minutes, but honestly that bothers me less than how many minutes DeBrincat, Dach, Kane played. Hawks ride them too hard and the defensive side of the puck is likely to suffer.

To quote others - "the NHL isn't a we try hard league" or "this isn't a development league".

Won't take long for King to figure out who can play at this level and who can't. But he is dealing with a shortage of major league talent right now.

This team is nowhere close to 2010. This team is bereft in top end talent, why they have so much trouble scoring 5 x 5.
- LAHawk

We have more depth on the 4th line than any team in the league.

And yet, somehow, Pittsburgh still got 44 shots through to the net. 14 from high danger spots.

Question, given that you see the game through a different lens than some.....is letting the other team have possession long enough to take 79 shots against your team a solid gameplan in The World of Dots?

"Listen, it's 2 wins. There's some cleaning up to do, obviously. But at least the battle level is there, the accountability is there, and you can see these guys are actually playing for each other."

I literally wrote this sentence a second before the Blackhawks assigned Wyatt Kalynuk to Rockford:

"And with Wyatt Kalynuk possibly making his season debut against Arizona on Friday, one has to think Erik Gustafsson's time might be all but over."

He took away a lot of ice time, which I am in favor of; but did the resulting big ice time for the good players contribute to the poor third period?

I think it was more of the Penguins really stepping up in the third period.

Right?

So much so that we’ve got 4th liners/13th forward types playing on the second line and the top PP unit

PER EK:

There will be no shortage of rumors this seasons surrounding Patrick Kane and Jon Toews, and talking to a few sources this morning, the game may already be afoot.

Per two sources, The Flames, who had interest in Eichel, have SERIOUS interest in adding Jonathan Toews and his experience to their surprise contending lineup. The Flames have a lot of talent to deal from…

More to come.

I would say probably not - I think they can handle that kind of ice time for one game.

And King knew (I assume he knew) that they have two days off now before AZ comes in, and then four days off before Seattle.

Those kinds of TOI matter most when they’re playing a normal schedule of every other nite or 3 in 4.
