Thanks, Theo for the sound byte play-by-play. Sorry if I missed this in the blog / comments, but I wish folks could take a look at the Kane / Toews presser with the same detail.

First reporter Question is about the coaching situation - JT, the Capt. Our capt. The longest serving capt in Hawk history, perhaps NHL? defers to Kane to answer the question?!?!?!?!? Why? Kane proceeds to be very charitable to Colliton.

Later in same presser a reporter directly asks JT about the coaching situation, etc - JT responds - "Are you asking me? Can you repeat that? I guess I don't grasp that," etc....the gives a deflection answer....

WHAT?

Me thinks more to the story....What do you think?

My all time favourite

Bickell and Teuvo Teravainen were traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a second-round pick (50th overall) in this year's NHL draft and a third-round pick in the 2017 NHL draft.

You'd have to dump the whole team; Torts doesn't tolerate lavender sniffers.

Does any one recall what the hawks record was for the first 15 games after Q was fired? If we are given to the idea that Q was respected by the players, that his system while harder on centers, was effective when executed, then we have to examine the talent level on the roster at the time. It was no secret that Q was not a fan of the roster moves and draft choices Stan had been making over the years. Coach and GM being on different pages never ends well for one of them, Q more than likely voiced his displeasure once too often so Stan canned him. So the Question I have to ask is, is this current team roster better, worse, or same as the roster Q had, and JC took over?

I am new to this blog and I have been impressed at the hockey IQ and analysis by a few of the contributors, so I am curious what the comparison of the roster would be. My thoughts being that while JC had many deficiencies, I don’t know that anyone else would have been able to put together a winning record with what the roster that was was provided.

You don’t need a Hockey Pedigree, or 800 games as a player to be a successful head coach. What you need is an FO that puts a roster together that compliments your core skill players, a coach that can prepare a team for each game, and that can make the in game adjustments, when the opposition is prepared against your system.

Stan had a lot to do with the talent level in Rockford, so I am not ready to pass judgement on DK for a less than stellar record in his time as coach. We will see over the next 15-20 games if there is any significant improvement.

My gut tells me it’s more the roster, than the coach that is at the root, regardless neither can be fixed overnight..

Q’s - the Hawks were 6-6-3 when they fired him in 2018.

It’s like that Simpsons episode where homer goes back in time, kills a bug and the whole world is different when he goes back. Except in this one Stan hands out a big fat deal to a Bryan Bickell and we end up trading another ‘next wave’ guy.

Isn’t it about time for DeHaan to have a shoulder injury and miss most of the season?

Travis Dermott

Salary @ $874,000

Maybe on the trade block

Excellent D Man that should be on the Hawks radar

- Colbyboy

His cap hit is $1.5 million, this season and next. He’s not an upgrade over Stillman or C Jones.

The only trade I’d do to acquire Dermott would be for Tyler Johnson, straight up, no retention.

Someone else on these boards broke down that part of the press conference with Toews and Kane and I believe the line of conversation was pretty benign, i.e. just a misunderstanding of the question and who it was directed to.

The summer before they fired Q, Stan signed Kunitz, Brandon Manning, and Cam Ward, and also pulled off the Hossa trade to bring back Kruger (and acquire Entwistle). Some say that Q didn't like the roster, but the Kunitz and Kruger deals had Q written all over them (and Stan alluded to as much in an interview after Q left).

You are right that the roster was not competition ready, but there was blame to go around for everyone. The good news is that none of those people are around anymore so the Hawks can start anew. The bad news is that they have to start anew.

FYI - I'm not going to be one of the impressive hockey minds on this board.

New blog! A look at the management, coaching, and player personnel decisions that the Blackhawks need to make over the next several months and into the offseason.

Plus, thoughts on the roster heading into tonight's game vs the Penguins.
