McDavid with one of the best individual goals I have seen
- wcorvette

i cant resist it any more. i'll still debate the overall greater player type argument (although that is getting tougher), but on a pure ability basis mcdavid has surpassed crosby for greater offensive ceiling. (obviously not saying current, that isnt even a conversation worth having, and i think a healthy crosby is still one of the top ten ish forwards in the game. i mean peak v peak)

i know im a fan boy, but people do somewhat forget just how much of a raw statistic mountain crosby missed due to injury. he was at his height of his powers and no one else was really close at that time.

yeah, the oilers feed him so much offensive time and yes he dominated against crappy competition last year. yeah he cheats up and doesnt defend and until they actually win something, you can argue what is it all worth. all that is true and fine. but what that dude is capable of is simply not real

I don’t think it’s fair to cross generations, so I’ll leave out the legends we all know, but for the modern age? Yeah. This kid is on another level. Scary talented.

He makes modern defensive systems and modern defensemen and modern goaltenders look like they're straight out of the 80's.

Brassard won't get fried but hopefully when and if Hayes comes back, Brassard goes to the 4th line where he belongs. Ellis comes back and then Yandle will have a better partner. I think it's more the wear and tear on the team as a whole. They simply defend too much. The big worry is the Sanheim/Ristolainen pairing. Sanheim looks awful and Ristolainen is his normal mediocre self. The Flyers didn't need physical play on the defense, they needed better puck movement and transition play. Especially with the subtraction of Voracek. Ellis and Hayes need to help with the transition game or the Flyers are not going to get where they need to be.

You're correct but not on that play. That's what happens when you waive a stick at a stick handling marvel. He goes right through you. Incredible stick handling and move but awful defense. Take the body.

Can't hit what you can't catch! McDavid plays the game at phenomenal speed! The thing with this guy is the fact that he sees the game with his brain as fast as his feet are moving. Lots of guys can skate fast, but with his hands and hockey smarts he is one of a kind in today's game. We were lucky enough to have season tickets to the Flyers from 1985-2005. Saw Gretzky in his prime. Everyone wondered why no one could ever seem to hit him. They just couldn't catch him to get a clean shot on him. Really a shame that McDavid plays in Edmonton and has the personality of a gnat cause you could really use this guy to market the game otherwise.

Easy for you to say. He may be the quickest shiftiest guy to ever play in the league. I didn’t see the game, but it sounded like the Rangers were caught out at the end of a long shift with fresh players on the ice for the oilers. They just got beat.

The way the Rangers dman, that was facing McDavid, bit on that little head fake. All his momentum was going left and McDavid went to his right. All he could do is swing his stick at him. Amazing

Just saw it. Amazing goal. Only downside is that they couldn’t beat the rags in regulation. They got a point Grr.

I did watch the play. Several times. I’m just saying that you don’t get all of the info from a highlight clip. Hard to know how gassed the Rangers players were and how fresh McDavid was. I don’t know the Rangers well enough to know, from that clip, if those were first line players or 4th. I’ve seen similar clips of McDavid making other players look silly. He’s freaky fast and shifty. Sometimes he just blows past guys and they are left waving their sticks at him.

It was one skater on 4. McDavid wasn't even at top speed. They waived weekly with their sticks. It was not a difficult play to defend.

When McDavid revs it up and is skating through the neutral zone at top speed. There isn't a defenseman in the league who can keep up with him. That was not the case on that play. Great stickhandling and deke by McDavid but you cannot stick check him like that.
Defenseman took outside turns leading to the opening. Just a whole mess of really poor fundamental defense.

Flyers hockeybizz is an amazing place! Only here can you find someone who doesn't think mcdavid is the what player in the world. The guy is absolutely on another level. There is nobody in the NHL who can contain this guy. Nobody. He is the best player in the NHL hands down. I wish we could have a mcdavid on our team

The point is that we see some of the same issues that we saw last year. The whole idea of a culture change is and always was, nonsense.

I think most see that although they have a decent record, they're really not a top team. It's a long season and hopefully they get a couple of players back and that will help. However it won't fix everything.
Again, where is the bar set? For me, anything less than legitimate contention is a failure.

- MJL

There are several things that are different, but the most important two things between last year and this year is 1. The Flyers are a much better 3rd period team than they were last year and 2. The goalies have been much better.

BUT! The Flyers are still not playing 60 minutes of hockey. They have had dreadful 2nd periods in just about every game and their starts have been uneven lately. They also have to be structured better defensively, because to me this was the reason the goalies feel off the cliff last year, they were under constant siege by grade A chances. We can argue about whether the 1st goal the other night was on Risto or Sanheim, but let's agree that defensively, the Flyers as a 5 man unit were not structured properly and thus they lost coverage down low resulting in a goal. Disciplined defensive teams do not let this happen!

Sorry, but playoff teams don't have Rasmus Ristolainen playing in their top 4 and Nate Thompson taking a regular shift. Honestly, mediocre would be an upgrade for Risto. I think Sanheim, though he had an awful game against the Pens, can be an effective 2nd pairing Dman, but not with Risto as his partner. He just doesn't have the hockey sense to be an effective player and he should be on the 3rd pair playing no more than 15 minutes per game.

Even if Ristolainen is at his mediocre best, he is not the type of defenseman you need for your top 4.

Lindros was probably the only "generational talent" player we've ever had in his prime. However, Bobby Clarke did win 3 Hart trophies in a 4 year span from 72-76 and Bernie Parent played as well as any goalie in NHL history from 1973-1975 so you could make a case that both were generational talents during that time period.

I totally agree, he just can't think the game at a high enough level to be out there against good players or in crucial situations.
