hockey is indeed a religion in Quebec, and there's no denying it's a very high-pressure market, but at the same time if your decision-making is based on the fans' or the media's reactions then you might not be the best person for the job...
- Pat1993

I mean Toronto is an equally high pressure market and they had the balls to tank openly for Austin. Not saying it worked out well for them because they've locked up too much money in too few players (Marner's contract is bad imo, he should be making a few million less than Tavares and Matthews because he s not as good), but Montreal is clearly not a contender so they should take the apparoach that maximizes chances for a contention window in the shortest time frame possible. That approach is tanking for at least a couple of years. And this rebuild should sure as (frank) not happen with Bergevin and Timmins at the helm.

The following is what I believe will happen this week or next

1. MB gets fired, Molson will not name a GM until end of season
2. Trade for a defensive centre
3. Trade for a LH puck moving dman

I think Toffoli and/or Drouin will be traded along with Lekhonen/Evans/Armia

- habs88888

so Molson would be the interim GM in the meantime..? I think this is very unlikely but then again, ever since the playoffs ended everything has been going downhill, so I guess nothing would be surprising anymore at this point.

do you mean tanking on purpose by basically getting rid of everyone except for a few kids? because while that strategy has its logic it also does not guarantee any form of success either... and yeah I agree some big changes need to happen in terms of management if they're actually going that route, it would be silly to keep the same personnel.

Correct me if I'm wrong.. but didn't you just play against a Defensive C yesterday .. that used to be on your squad.. I don't know all the details.. but wouldn't it have been just as easy to keep PD around ???

They will draft #3 again, and pick a guy that is ranked 17th on most lists because they think they are more bright than everybody else.

he didn't want to stay, in fact he confirmed recently that even during the playoffs he already knew he wouldn't sign with the habs. also, you could argue that he's a tad expensive for a third-line center (he was #1 by default with the habs for quite some time but he's already been given the 3C role in LA...)

Well then there is that... appreciate the clarification.. I had no idea he was #1 C in Montreal ... and he is expensive for a 3rd line C.

yeah, his offensive production is too low to be making almost 7M dollars, but I have to admit he played a major role in the team's success during the playoffs. he wasn't scoring goals but he was steadily shutting down the opposition's best players, which is very valuable in itself.

I acknowledge up front it s not guranteed as is the case with Edmonton and Toronto, but I think it maximizes the chances. Chicago, Pittsburg, and to a degree Tampa Bay had poor seasons that allowed drafting of key players. It seems like everytime Montreal did it it was a poopty draft.

if they do this, I hope Molson hires some very qualified people to make all these important decisions and gradually bring the team on the right path again from the ground up. if not they could very well become the Edmonton Oilers (they're finally starting to be competitive, but it's insane when you think about how long it actually took them, and the number of picks it involved...)
