It's possible they didn't know. Often, victims of rape keep it silent because it's embarrassing to them. Especially in an environment where there would be a fear of reprisal. It's likely that they heard some rumors, but were just that. - 2sticks1puck
Understood, but focus here should be on the victim not the others. |

Sopel and Boynton have absolutely nothing to gain from saying what they said about everyone knowing, so i am inclined to believe them in conjunction with the results of the investigation and the testimony from Beach himself. Everybody knew, from management all the way down to players and staff. Yes he was young, but if Toews was the captain of his team and players on his team were harassing a teammate for being the target of a sexual assault and he did nothing that is a huge stain on his character. Then to be so tone deaf today, 10 years later, is sad and telling.
Anyone who didn't say anything should think about it every time they try to sleep, considering their silence resulted in more real world harm (to a 16 year old in particular). I don't think there's a grey area here |

Once you hear about those two speaking out it’s very hard to believe Toews, or any other player, are clean in it |

That goes to my first post about the somewhat toxic culture of hockey. Is what happened acceptable? No. However, forms of hazing have been around sports for decades. It's not OK, but in the lens of a player, it wouldn't be looked on as a big deal at the time.
More of this falls on management. Bowman and Q KNEW what was going on and did zilch to stop it.

I don't disagree that management, for lack of a better analogy, are the adults in the room who are supposed to be protecting their staff and players. And yes, I understand the power dynamic is such that players, especially young ones or role players, are incentivized to look the other way out of self preservation. That is how this happened to Beach to begin with. But goddamn, 10 years later with everything out on the table and (theoretically) no fear of retribution from the powers that be, and they're all still being cagey and/or quiet. It's still the old boys club |

That's kind of my point though, the idea should be to make it so the old boys club goes down. These players are literally doing this because it's the old boys club. It's easy for players like Kane and Keith who have made boatloads of money to speak up, but that guy who is just struggling to make a team would be incentivized not to speak up so they aren't essentially blackballed.

Toews said he didnt know enough and then defended Bowman. Keith straight up says he didn't know anything. I don't know, it just doesn't feel like either of them want to tear it down. My feeling is that nothing much changes and everyone forgets about it in a few years.
They need a whistleblower hotline type thing administered by a 3rd party with resources to investigate these things because gosh it sure doesn't seem like leaving it up to the league to self govern is working. |
