Trades are supremely difficult to make. The idea of "trade Marner for a top, young Dman" and other top prospects and picks without retaining salary is harder than anyone thinks.
First you need to identify a team with that player. Then you need that GM to want to trade them. Also want to trade them for Marner as if they have a need for him.
GMs may like Marner for their team but doesn't mean it's a fit in all aspects. - Aaron_85
Marner to Nashville for Johansen + Askarov + 1st
Nashville gets an elite forward, get rid of Johansen’s contract, and despite giving up Askarov, they still have a very good younger starting goalie in Saros.
Leafs get a blue chip goalie prospect, 2.9M cap savings, a 1st, and depth at centre (Johansen can play C or RW).
Boom. And yes Dozzer, I would make that trade if I were the Preds GM. |

If I was one I’d bet against ya lol
I think he’ll stick around if the leafs are true cup contenders but if they’re not I won’t be surprised if he wants out. Think about it, he’s in year 6 now in Toronto. Be 8 years if he plays out the full contract. If the leafs haven’t made any true progress, I doubt he stays. - Dozzer
The point that stands out from your comment is that ultimately it's his choice, and with that in mind you could absolutely be right. Who knows what's ultimately more important to him other than him. If this is still a poop show by then maybe he wants out. 🤷🏻♂️
I do think the leafs will do everything in their power to wear the blue and white for the rest of his career, and that's a lot of power. I don't see any other organization come even close to competing with the Leafs there, they have 8 years of his career in the books by that point.
Gentleman's wager? I will bet you a box of your favourite high end beer Marner goes before Matthews. 😂 |

Lol fair enough, to be honest my only question is who would Nashville replace him with since he’s playing C on line 1? |

Maybe I'm alone on this? I can accept if I'm alone on this.
The leafs take that one square in the backside. Such a game of whack a mole with high drafted goalies. Give up Marner to run that risk and pay Johansen to be a bum for a 1st? 🤮
A quality defenceman and another draft pick and I think about it. I don't even care if that's highway robbery, that's what you pay for getting rid of Johansen. |

Also at 11 million not many GMs will even have the approval from their owner to take him on
I know that sounds nuts but a lot of owners in the NHL won’t want to pay that unless it’s for a true blue huge star player - Dozzer
But it’s not 11M in actual money. After the signing bonus was paid, Marner is only about 25M for the remainder of the contract. 750K salary this year, 8M next year, and 8.025 in the final two years. |

Lol fair enough… I don’t bet money but I guess I can bet that.
Like I said, I think it’s going to severely rely on where the leafs stand by then… if they’re still a circus that isn’t truly accomplishing anything I can see him want to go, however if they’re truthfully cup contenders (or he’ll even a winner) by then I could see him being willing to stay.
A big part here is that he’s the best American player in the league, and since any team will pretty much pays him what he wants he may desire going back to his home country, and that will be all it takes. |

8 million still isn’t cheap, and his cap hit will still be damn near 11 so it still effects a team one way or another.
I’m not against the idea of moving him but I honestly think the return will suck |

I’d take the risk on Askarov. His numbers are similar to Vasilevskiy at the same age.
Could always try to convince them to give us Myers and they can have Holl. |

Well Johansen is making 8M salary, so it would be a wash money wise, and they have 11M cap space, so adding 2.9M wouldn’t hurt.
It’s a go, boys. I got this. The bird is the word. |

If they could do it I’m not against the idea but I doubt Askarov would be included as well… but Johansen and a first is worth it for the cap space alone since the guy can play on the top 6 as a winger |

something else than Johansen and a 1st must come back.
the 1st is the price to take Johansen.
