Don't usually agree with Phil Mushnick, but given our discussions on this in the past, thought this was worth posting and spot on:
Thursday, on one of those MSG channels, Islanders analyst Butch Goring and the replay crew presented a strong show-and-tell: Goring criticized Islanders defender Adam Pelech for not forcing the Blue Jackets’ forwards toward the near boards.

As Goring noted, Pelech allowed the forward a more dangerous opportunity from nearer and more flush to the goal. It was a concise, applicable and appreciated session.

And it got me to wondering why Rangers MSG telecasts don’t try to present similar, rather than a steady beat of analyst Joe Micheletti pointing to Rangers players and saying, “Good job,” “Good play,” “Good effort."

We have to wait for the intermission with Vali to get that. I wonder if Vali can do live commentary.

Honestly hoping he can. I know some don't like him but I love his comments and critiques. Plus he's still recent to the game unlike Joe so likely has a better relationship with the players

Lets say were in the thick of it for the playoff with what we have. pickle first, me after... what is Phil Kessel worth on the rental market? What are we willing to pay for him? Is he the best option for a RW rental? A line of Panarin - Strome - Kessel could be really interesting.

Typically players like him (and worse, Foligno) will usually cost a team a 1st round pick.

I think he'll honestly be a first round pick. Arizona would need to maintain cap floor compliance though so maybe they want his salary back or retained?

I think we end up trading for a top 6 wing and capable centerman as rentals this year if we can make a run. I don't see them doing anything drastic though unless we somehow offload Kreider or Trouba for cap space moving forward

I dont think theyre gonna go for a center. I think theyre gonna stick with what we have. Considering how Panarin has looked without Strome (which could just be a coincidence), I doubt they look to upgrade there. I also highly doubt they trade Chytil. I gotta say to start the year, he hasnt been terrible.

Would Kravtsov and the STL 2nd round pick be enough to pry Kessel from ARI with 50% retained?

Yea, he’d definitely get a first. Although they already have 3 in the next draft. They are in desperate need of a goalie

I highly doubt the Rangers have any interest in trading Georgi if theyre in the thick of it for the playoffs.

Arizona is gonna do everything they can to get Shane Wright.

It should be --- I just don't think Kessel is worth a 1st round pick anymore.

We also don’t need salary retained on his final season

The retention is more for ARI to stay above the salary cap floor, we dont need it.

Maybe not but he did have 20 goals and 43 points in 56 games last year for ARI, which isnt bad at all considering what that team has.

To me for a rental, that’s way too much and the team has been pretty clear they don’t want a veteran in return. Want more of a younger player

Kreider is going nowhere, especially seeing how he has played. Trouba is not worth the contract, but his play has been better and he fits what Gallant likes on the blue line, a physical presence

Well, seems the consensus is its probably more than what Kessel is worth. Seems a 2nd round pick may be enough for him.

However, wanting a younger player will be far more difficult to pull off in a Kravtsov swap.

The odds are extremely slim, but if come trade deadline were out of the playoffs, I could see them approaching Kreider about a potential trade.

Could be the case, if they are out of it. May also depend on how the kids have developed.

As a rental, maybe a 1yr extension stop gap RW that only costs them a 2nd round pick. Its not a bad move.

Younger than Kessel yet theyre so resistant to play our kids, and put them in a position to succeed. Pajuniemi looked like a stud in preseason, with how short we are on RW theres no reason to not give him a shot. Then Barron, who has 2 goals in 2 games at HFD and had 21 points in 21 games last year, is playing the LW on the 4th line.

Play Goodrow, Barron, Pajuniemi for a couple games and see what happens. Go out on a limb for a shift or 2 and put Panarin with Barron and Pajuniemi.

I highly doubt CK20 would accept a trade anywhere, Mika and him are best buds and the team is on the uptick even if they were out of a playoff spot by then, although I think it is highly unlikely we are.

I think Kreider is too important to the depth of this team even though I dont think hes a first line player.
