Hard ass coach demands players "play the right way" and "start on time". Team bucks his approach. Manager gives the keys to the franchise to young, talented, and rich core and hardass gets fired.
Team hires new coach who vows to allow players to "express themselves" more on the ice, all the while also trying to demand they "play the right way". Players tune out new coach and regularly don't start on time, and continue to cheat on the details of winning hockey. Flybys, turnovers, missed assignments, avoiding contact, getting outworked and embarrassed by supposedly lesser teams.
This group is clearly a handful to coach. That is undeniable at this point. Keefe's post game comments - he absolutely wanted to rip them a new one, but you could almost hear him thinking - where do I go from there? It was a bunch of psychobabble about managing the group's mindset. I don't envy him one bit. |

Still early for these bishes to turn it around |

I have to admit, after this game, I don't trust the Shanaplan as much as I used to.
I trust it even more.
One doesn't throw in the towel over a garbage game. Everybody takes a beating sometime.
It's six games. I'll save plenty of space on the bandwagon for when the weakhearts are clamouring to jump back on.
GLFG - Zezel
Usually I'm with you - here we part company. And you are correct we all take beatings. However It's not 6 - that is the whole point of frustration with most fans I believe - it's the continued enigma that is the team and leadership or lack thereof for the past few years.
The same platitudes being rolled out and spewed.
Effort and determination are not being exhibited and that's got to stop.

I agree with this post.
These 6 games are not in isolation. We're seeing some of the same issues that have dogged this team since the end days of Babs: there seems to be a lack of urgency and an inability to put forth a consistent effort.
An example of this systemic issue was again in fine form last night: the team had a lethargic start for the first few minutes while the opposing team came right out of the gate with energy.
The core players, with the exception of Willie, if not looking lost at times are fighting the puck, can't seem to crack the defensive code, and find & convert high danger chances into actual goals.
Yeah, we're only 6 games in, there's a lot of new faces on this club with strategic tweaks that incumbent players may still be sorting out... but holy poop, we're 6 games in and just got spanked in one of the most embarrassing ways possible: against a club missing Crosby, Malkin, Rust, Letang, and Carter.
Keefe better do some serious line blending for Game 7 and cut the TOI for core players significantly to send a (frank)ing message.
I don't mind this team losing but they should at least look like they did against the Rags when they do. |

I stopped watching after the 4th or maybe 5th goal (they were coming pretty quickly). Every line except for the 4th on occasion was getting beaten to the puck all night. So, blend away. If there are adjustments that make hockey sense right now, make them. I know everybody has their individual fall guys but I don’t think you can cut the whole team’s minutes. If anybody didn’t get a message from that game and comes out flat for the next one, Dubas should put a little checkmark next to their name and start thinking about options. No exceptions. |

It’s time to roll out all the cliches. All of them. - Canada Cup
“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Dudes, c’mon.
They’ve been highly consistent in the regular season since they fired Babs, with a very high winning percentage.
This is why Toronto can’t have nice things.

If by "nice things" you mean a team that is "consistent" in the regular season (which I would argue, btw) but has absolutely NO CLUE how to play a detailed playoff style of game, then you're right - I don't want it. |
