Better to start Campbell tonight while the team isn't tired.
Get these 2 points.

- bobbyisno1

The Sharks suck and Hutch isnt as bad as people say.

Has a .920 sv% in his past 10 games. He is a decent 3rd string goalie, probably one of the better insurance goalies in the league.

Rather not risk injury, the Leafs have shown shot and scoring chance dominance early on in the season...no reason not to expect the same tonight against a bottom 5 team on paper.

I just read an article that said Alec Baldwin accidentally killed one of the film staff and injured another with a prop gun during a scene on that set.

Complete accident but it sounds like there may have been a live round in the gun. How the (frank) that situation happens - especially after the Brandon Lee incident years ago on the set of The Crow - is beyond me.

- mjones242

I immediately thought of the terrible death of Brandon Lee from the Crow and also thought "how in the hell can that have ever happened again?". Sad and terrible.
And not to feel sorry for a mega rich celebrity but imagine being Baldwin and having to live with that for the rest of your life?

TL;DR: Hutch isn't so bad that I'd risk Campbell's health on a back-to-back.

Huchinson has played 17 games since Babs was let go and has a .905 save percentage with a GSAA of -1.4.

In the last three years since the start of 2019, these goalies have a save percentage in the .904 - .906 range:

Andersen, Gibson, Bobrovsky, Broissoit, Korpisalo, Kahkonen

Since GSAA is a cumulative stat (so playing less like Hutch does favour his number), if you convert that to a GSAA/60 he compares with Price, Georgiev, Samsonov - all goalies who have performed a little below average, but pretty much are average goalies.

The Hutch hate stems from the fact that the 2019 defense put together by Dubas did not mesh with the defensive constructs put together by Babcock, and it was a disaster. Everyone suffered in that system. No one really cared one way or the other for Hutch, but the 6 games he played in 2019 under Babcock as a coach were disastrous - he was 0-6 with a .879 save percentage. He was a little better, but still well below average under Keefe @ 4-5, .892.

Again, I would never advocate for him as a full-time backup. He's just not that good, but he got the job done well enough last year (4-2-1; .919).

Great post and really opened my eyes and tweak my opinion of Hutch. He does have decent #'s outside of that 2019 nightmare stretch for the Leafs but he always looks so scrambly and out of position to me when I watch him.....he reminds me of me when I watch video of myself playing goal and no NHL (ok aslo AHL, JR Hockey, Peewee Tripe A etc. etc. etc.) team wants that!

so, you're thinking Hill makes 57 saves and leads the Sharks to a 2-1 victory?

Joking about gun violence isn't ok to me, nor someone's accidental death less than 24 hours after it happens.

I would completely agree that Hutch fails the eye test. I had commented on something similar in a post yesterday.

In some ways it's the complete and total opposite of when we went from CuJo to Belfour. I remember my very first impression of Belfour as a Leaf was how lazy he looked compared to Joseph. Then you realized he was that much technically and positionally better. It changed your perception a lot. Hutch is the opposite of that. He looks absolutely awful - he never seems to know where the puck is, who has it, what they're doing with it or where it's going - but he's posting decent numbers.

His goalie coach should be launched into the Sun.

As a terrible goalie I will refer you to the post I quoted with some stats that show Hutch is in fact not a terrible goalie, he makes us sweat and whatnot but he's been pretty good other than the 2019 disaster.

I will not let him be the next Marty Marincin! He can't be!

I just hope the Leafs give him some goal support and play a solid defensive game and get 2 points.

What you said about Belfour vs Cujo is so bang on and I too noticed it. Eddie Belfour was one of the best positionally sound goalies in his later years that I have ever seen - he was so good at it (unlike the shootout).

I'm not sure if it's Hutch's goalie coach's fault but for him to be playing in the NHL and be that positionally imperfect is a real indication of how athletic he is. MAF was like that early in his career and really tightened up his positional play as he aged.

You posted a sarcastic and angry statement about Marner whom you clearly don't like and hey your opinion - you do you, that's cool.

Sure I've seen people post that Marner is a superstar (I kinda' think he fits the definition and was a 1st team all star but again my opinion) and I do think trading him would be a mistake and come back to bite them. Again my opinion and I reserve the right to change it and am willing to do so if warranted. I was a full on "trade Willy" guy after the first covid related playoffs. I am in no way, shape or form in that camp anymore based on the changes I saw in his game and performance last year and in the last playoffs. I'm hoping to see more playoff success for Mitch this year, I really think he is capable of it.

Let's not kid ourselves here though the "right thing" could be either to keep him or move him time will tell - I just happen to disagree with you on which is the right thing to do.

The use of terms like apologists and posting snarky and angry/ sarcastic comments towards those who disagree with your point of view is how things go sideways in here quite often in my opinion so I will do my absolute best not to do so and would ask the same in return.

As far as if Marner has a terrible playoff again sure, I think they have to reevaluate if he should stay or go, same for any of the core players who have failed to be successful in the playoffs as Marner isn't the only one who hasn't produced in the playoffs to the level they should/need to for the Leafs to have success.

I believe you are right that he won't be moved this year regardless so let's hope he ends up having a stellar year AND playoffs.

The constuct of this team may be completely flawed - many would argue it is, but the Habs last year essentially were constructed in a way that relied on unworldly goaltending and they got a cup final so there is hope teams can overcome perhaps not being constructed in away that we would all consider to be ideal.

I'm actually not sure what team you could say is? Tampa was heavily reliant on their cap 'management' for success, (I think that's undeniable) so who is the best 'constructed' team and how much success have they had?

The fun part (or maybe painful part) if finding out if your imperfectly constructed team can get the luck, hockey juju or whatever else they need to overcome and win!

- Cush29

"you do you". Ouch!

I don't think I'm usually aggressively sarcastic but, with Marner complaining specifically, my opinion on his contract is beyond kicking a dead horse so I've been trying to spice it up a bit recently to keep myself amused. I guess I hit a nerve, my bad!

Look, I don't hate Marner as a person or a player. I just feel that contract is hot (frank)ing garbage and listening to the droning about how he's a superstar and how, if we trade him now, it'll be the worst trade ever and we shouldn't give up on him, to the assertion that it's just a matter of time before he has a sublime playoff performance drives me a bit bonkers.

We all know that the Leafs are in cap hell and his contract is the poster child of an unnecessary overpay for a player who is primarily a playmaker.

I would enjoy Mitch Marner and be less of a sarcastic poop if he was making 9M and took a team friendly deal -- which, looking around the league, other players seem to be making (yes, yes - pandemic induced / flat cap influenced) those types of deals.

Per the "apologists" comment, I'm not accusing you specifically of being that (my original reply was to CC) but the tacit implication that I was making up a strawman argument kind of set me off a bit because we've seen enough Marner debating on these forums with perspectives on both sides of the equation: he's a hero or he's a goat. You're an "apologist" or a "hater". Reductive? Yes, but I'm pretty passionate about my opinion on his contract and feel it's actively (frank)ing with this team's cap structure and when I watch him play I don't feel like he tilts the ice enough to make that kind of $$$. It just burns me when people assert that trading him would be a catastrophic mistake. Maybe the ghosts of Tom Kurvers, John Kordic, Andrew Raycroft, Phil Kessel, et al. panic some on here. Not moi. (though maybe I'm a space cadet here. It's possible!)

But yes, I hope he steps up this season and dominates at the time of year we all desperately need him to. I'm not convinced he can play in low-event, tight-checking, circle the wagons type playoff hockey -- but we'll see if he can crack the code.

Lastly, I don't think I usually find myself in a sideways conversation where I get personal. I apologize if what I wrote seemed like it was aggressive or personal!

Cheers!

Yeah, can you imagine being the person who pulled that trigger? It was accidental but you placed your trust in the armorer (or whatever they're called) on the set to have everyone's safety absolutely sacred and this happens.

Looks like Baldwin has immediately reached out to the husband and family of the deceased with his deepest condolences/sympathies but yeah, how do you not feel haunted forever?

Horrible.
