I disagree. They get in for a lot of good chances. They outchanced San Jose significantly tonight. In terms of the down low high danger chances, they were probably about the same. The difference was the bad goals allowed by Hutchinson.

The use the perimeter to move the puck around, create movement and chaos and then push the puck into high danger areas. One thing they are doing this year that I don't like is that they are shooting the puck from low danger areas more. More shots that don't create rebounds (or even really have a chance of doing so) isn't helping.

Why aren't our superstar forwards creating more high danger chances? And if they are, why aren't they converting more?

Marner has no problem shooting the puck over the glass, but god forbid he tries to shoot the puck into the back of the net.

AM34 I'm giving a bit of a break as he missed training camp.

JT at least scored tonight.

Marner. I don't know. He seems active and like he's doing... things. But it's just not happening for him. 🤷

I’ll take a broken Eichel and 900K cap space over that bum.

What do you think the Leafs could get in return if they were to trade Marner. Not very many teams have the cap space to work a deal.

I don't have that specific answer - except maybe that our best goal scorer has played 2 games and didn't have a preseason? He definitely f'd up that play where he got the puck in the highest of danger areas and didn't even shoot. Tavares has been fighting the puck. Marner has been fighting everything. Hill also made some great and timely saves.

The idea behind the style is that results will come more often than they won't, but the idea behind any professional sport is that results aren't 100% guaranteed.

I am not sure what any of that means. In the NHL, teams are no better than their goaltending. Goaltending is a critical part of the game. If the Leafs have inferior goaltending, they will get inferior results. That is just the way it is.

JT is only borderline/maybe elite…

I meant Reilly and Mitch.

Time for management to say “Morgan we like you so we will offer you 7 million per. We know you might get more on the open market but as of right now Sandin is PP1. So you decide”

A deflection of his ass and off the Shark's shin pad. That's a Bunting type goal, not an elite center and captain.

JT can go.

Or at least give the C to Matthews so he will reconsider leaving this (frank)fest of a franchise.

Hutch sucked. Pretty even game. San Jose played well. Up tempo. Getting good movement from their back-end - especially Karlsson. Hutch allowed 3 weak goals and 1 where the D in front of him were too busy doing the dog.

In the end, the Leafs probably had the better chances, and San Jose scored more goals. Marner and Ritchie are still struggling.

You may be right about the approach with Reilly but I don’t think they will do it.

I know some folks here have said they want to see 2 more balanced PP units Bobby maybe? Barb? Sorry I can’t recall who exactly - but watching those 2 units tonight I feel like they should really consider trying a more balanced PO approach across 2 units.

If PP2 had a guy with more finish I think they would have scored in the 3rd there when they had the Sharks running around.

Opposing team's goalie played kinda well.

Our goalie played like poop.

Marner dipsy doodled nothing, again.

Matthews...gets a pass, so far since he missed preseason but looks fast and hungry. He should play with Nylander not Marner for a while....or forever.

JT did nothing to motivate the team with his captaincy but take one off the ass from other players hard work.

Rielly, meh. Trade him now because it won't matter.

Dumb calls by the refs against the Leafs.

PP sucks because Keefe wants a bunch of "star" players on one line instead of spreading the talent around to make it less predictable.

I could go on but you get it.

three team trade...

Eichel goes to St Louis - apparently they currently have the greatest interest

Marner & Tarasenko & STL 1st Pick go to Buffalo

Paryako and Kyrou BUF 2nd 22 and 2nd 23 to Toronto

Buffalo solves their Eichel problem without sending him to New York or New Jersey
St. Louis gets "their guy" in Eichel and solves their Tarasenko problem
Leafs get out from under Marner's boat anchor contract gives themselves a bit of CAP space

It's radical, but after watching PP1 tonight I'm of the current mindset (which is always temporary anyway) where I'd move Marner out of the Bumper spot on PP1 and put Tavares there. Or the way they played tonight, move Marner, Rielly and Tavares to PP2 and move Sandin, Spezza and Bunting to PP1. Spezza's got the point shot, Bunting can play the bumper providing a screen / net-front presence, Sandin can distribute from the top of the umbrella or shoot, and Matthews & Nylander can also shoot and distribute.

It's early days yet but I remain super unimpressed with this team's ability to consistently compete.

Sound like a tired, tropey critique? Yeah, but it's hard to argue against it, amirite/amirov?

remember when Hutchinson first played for the Leafs last year I believe - and he looked really shakey and sucked.

remember when Bozak used to always try and find Kessel and force passes into him.

well Hutchinson was pretty much that same guy, replace Bozak with Marner and Kessel with Matthews.

then add in Sandin being out of position defensively about 10 times in the first and second period but Dermott bails him out.

sort of like that

Putting those two in the same sentence as "struggling" is laughable.

Marner is struggling, lost, losing and so not worth his contract. Marner should be 1.0 ppg.

Ritchie is figuring out his new team and is earning his cheap contract. He needs to be 0.25 ppg at best.

You forgot the part about the Leafs getting outworked by a team playing a back to back, and third game in four nights.

I see what your saying but I don’t think they have been outplayed in any games yet this year. For stretches yes, but not overall.

Sharks are surprisingly a really good team early in the season. Good speed up front and some high end skill on their back end. They might surprise in a weak Western Conference.
