Eichel could be traded even if he has surgery right? What's the point in not just letting him get it now? Only ones who will trade for him are the ones who will let him have it.

The risk I guess is it just ends his career?

Ya, been discussed quite a bit on here.

If Jack gets his own surgery against Sabres team doctors required surgery and it fails leaving him permanently impaired;
- Jack loses his career
- Sabres lose a trade asset
- Insurance company may, or very likely will not cover his contract value...so Jack loses $50m

Edit:
Also, if the Sabres grant him his preferred surgery without some sort if legally binding Release Document in-place, and the Insurance company is not on board (very likely and is a separate medical determination from Sabres Medical Team) and if fails, then add in:
- Jack then sues the Sabres for his $50m

It's very complicated and a fair amount of unknowns that would need to be hammered out.
