AV should have just made a line change after that icing. I wonder why he didn't think of that.

did you play any roller hockey in fishtown? Maybe some ice hockey at Scanlon rink?

You would have to ask him. Though clearly you do not know much about youth hockey.

I hate the Bruins, but I do love Brue Cassidy as a coach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40nYmUo7t8A

Wont matter...people will complain that line2 possession time is down even though the have a "set it up quickly and shoot approach" that is probably stifling it. Those same people will most likely have historically complained we over pass and waste time instead of shooting.
- juiced

The flyers score 15 goals through 3 games and some people will still complain.
It's the beginning of the season for evey team so no one is on their A game yet but the flyers are getting it done.
So far cam Atkinson and brassard are two sneaky sneaky good moves that are paying massive dividends.
The flyers will tighten up the loose areas before long and this team will help more and more as the season goes on. Right now I see a team that is playing good hockey and consistently imposing a nice forecheck

These are little things but it's the little things that help you win games

Go flyers!

That's one YUGE difference that I've seen so far. Even when we are up by a goal or two the flyers never stop pushing. They continuously back check and play hard on the puck when they don't have possession. I didn't see that at all last season.
I know it's early but I seeing a lot of good things from this team. The best compliment that I can give this team right now is that they look nothing like the team from last year.. and it feels good to say that

It's game 3 so it's still early but at least we have entertaining and fun hockey again

- Bob Habib

yes, I agree. Last year, even though the Flyers were winning early in the season you could clearly see they were playing poorly and eventually it would catch up to them. While so far the Flyers this year are not perfect, they are playing much better hockey, for example generating a good number of neutral zone turnovers, much better gaps between their forwards and defenseman, much better slot coverage, goalies playing solid, forwards playing with more speed and shooting the puck. Add the physical element to the lineup in Risto, MacEwen and Thompson, and you got a recipe for a good year!

You are not allowed to change lines when you are called for icing.

I personally expect the top line to be able to attack and take some play to the opposition. Couturier is notorious as a player for being able to do that. What do you expect from this team? We certainly can be happy with a win but we also have to look at the entire picture.
- MJL

Looking at the boxscore only... Coots had a total ice time 19:37 with 1PPG-1A-2Points (even). On a night versus one of the better lines in the NHL. I'll take that any day. IF he did that all season, he'd have 82 goals, 82 assists, 164 points.

It is a bit worrisome that he is a -161 for his career. That play he made on the Bruins second goal was brutal. You just can't make those kind of blunders at this level cause it will end up in your net every time. At least he was positioned right on the Marchand goal, but gotta have his stick there instead of just standing around watching. Not a good first game by him, but not gonna crucify the guy either. Just one game and Marchand is a sneaky little rat around the net.
- Phillywhiteout

Agree with this assessment. Not overreacting but hoping to see a better game from rr. I’ll give it time but if we see that every game the guy won’t be resigned. Having said that, I’ve seen better from him in the preseason.

Watching MacEwen in person I was struck by his size and mobility. He won a few good board battles and also set up some scoring chances. Not bad for a waiver wire pickup in his first game with minimal practice.

I think a guy like that will definitely improve the 4th line as he gets more acclimated.

When the 4th line is NAK - Laughton -McEwen it's going to become a site favorite I'd guess

Flyers are 2-0-1 in the early stages of the season...

Hurry someone find something to nitpick quick!

Ellis' beard seams to have plateau'd after a nice start.

By game 3 he should be Rip Van Winklin'.

from the couch I agree, I think with better linemates he is a nice fit. Thompson just can't keep up and NAK just makes bonehead plays. Down the road, with some luck, I would like to see

MacEwen, Laughton and Allison
JVR Brassard/Hayes Oscar

When Hayes gets back, hopefully the 4th is Lindblom-Laughton-McEwen. Could be a good one.

Like I posted on the old blog, very important confidence wise to have a solid start and while we need to improve aspects for sure, getting the points is critical.

Not that it’s an exact comparable, I remember the beginning of the 07/08 season after we had just consisted dead last and made lots of changes. We started the season well and although there were hiccups in the season (I remember a 10 game losing streak that almost knocked us out of the dance) the good start brought back confidence to the team and allowed them to recover from a bad stretch later on. They went on to the ecf not that this team for sure can do the same.

The dive he made to redirect the puck in the defensive zone late was a smart heads up play.

The Flyers lost the possession battle but watching in person they played pretty tight in their own zone even when hemmed in. They didn't allow many real tough looks and kept Boston out of the danger zones for the most part.

I don't know if I want JVR anywhere near the Bruins top line. To me the matchup should have been the Brassard line against the Perfection line, toe to toe, the Flyers best line versus the Bruins best line. I think Cam and Farabee's speed and skill along with Brassard's d-zone play, would be able to put the Bruins line on their heals and make them play defense more, which is the best way to play them ... i.e. puck possession.
- jd250

I would not play the Brassard line against the Bruins top line. Brassard can't handle that in my opinion. That's just asking for trouble and it takes away the offensive advantage that line currently has.

Do you expect them to continue to score 5 goals a game? When the scoring lessens or even goes into a slump, which it inevitably will, is that when their overall team game will factor in? Will they be better able to compete and win games if they play a better possession game overall and have the opposition have the puck less?
