It's my dream that one day the Leafs draft a goalie who plays in the NHL on a regular basis, for the Leafs
- TheMussel

Perhaps they should start consider drafting a goalie before the third round.

I mean, there was Eric Fichaud and Francis Larivee? Maybe as a fan base, we haven't gotten over that 1st rd pick from 1994? Or the 2nd rd pick from 1996?

I honestly don’t think that matters… I mean Hellebuyck was 5th round

It’s primarily about developing them well after that and the leafs have yet to prove they can do it

Shesterkin was a 4th rounder.

I mean it's tough, you gotta go with your rankings and goalies worthy of top 2 rounds are rare, hard to get a bluechip. (i think).

I was really hoping for Askarov, wonder if moving up 4 spots in the draft would have been a possibility.

Re Jays
180mil sounds like a lot

but it goes fast...but should be room to improve

BLUEJAYS HOTSTOVE
@bluejayhotstove
Blue Jays will operate next season with an expected payroll of 180M with potential to go over that number for the “right situation”

A significant step forward by ownership as Shapiro/Atkins continue to build a World Series caliber roster

TOR will be very active this offseason

Andrew Stoeten
@AndrewStoeten

Shapiro said yesterday that their final payroll meeting with Rogers isn’t for another month. There’s still a presentation to be made. What are we doing here?

In this scenario, which again, if true is very definitely not finalized, the active roster opening day number would be more like pushing $150M I’d guess. Which actually does probably track with what Shapiro said yesterday about growth. Last year it was $135M.

Shapiro was clear they won’t be pushing the CBT threshold anytime soon, and that’s $210, so $180M plus that other stuff is just not realistic. The Jays have $60M coming off the books, so add $15M, subtract arb raises, and that might actually get you what they have to work with.

But all of their money and more (Roark, Yates, Phelps, etc.) is coming off the books. So if this is right it would be about $75M to work with for FA’s and arbitration raises. That’s not as big as it seems, because they added Berríos and have more arb guys. But a healthy amount.

Goalies are voodoo, its a waste.

Lou traded a late 1st and some other picks for 5 years of .918% in Freddy.

Draft a few in the mid rounds and hope they hit...if not trade a late first and a 2nd for an established one.

Or sign one.

But its a waste to use a 1st rounder on one when mid round picks end up being the successful goalies most of the time.

From what I read, Ruskies have the best goalie development right now so keep looking there.

Agreed. Goalies seem to develop fully a couple of years later so it’s so hard to draft a goalie early while feeling guaranteed he’ll develop into an NHLer

Draft the tallest goalie available in the 4th round.

And then develop him properly.

The guy on the radio machine in my car was saying that the Russians aren’t pushing technique on goalies at an early age. They want them to develop their instincts and their ability to follow and read the play. Technique comes a little bit later. Sherstskin/whateverskin was always right on the play last night. But he has has great technique. He’s up fast, with his body in great control. He really is a good goalie.

Yes, but in recent years, they've become much more of a bland, corporate experience. They are now more of a cookie-cutter, same experience, no matter what the pub.

And slight name change, so the Fox and Firkin is now "The Fox - a Firkin Pub" (and the same for all others).

I've been into the original a few times in the past few years - the Fox and Firkin (sorry, The Fox - a Firkin Pub) - on Eglinton, just east of Yonge. Still a good place for a quick drink before or after a movie.

Noice
Well too bad they are bland and boring now.

Carey Price was drafted in 2005 and didn't get his 1st NHL game until 2007..
I don't think any goalie in the past 25 years has played in the NHL at the age of 18. Not even Luongo and the Islanders were brutal back then.

Edit: Not since Tom Barasso
