The Marner contract in an vacuum isn’t all that bad. Should be closer to Rantanen’s deal, but whatever. It’s the fact they had two 11M contracts signed already that makes it a problem. And yes, the signing of Tavares has proven to be a mistake.

Matthews-Marner on one line, then Nylander at C on another. No problem.

Oh well. Let’s hope they pull off the impossible and win the Cup a Playoff series.

- Steven_Seagull

I also think that his contract would have been considered not bad if it weren’t for covid locking up the cap. In the last two seasons it only raised by 2 million overall, where before covid it roughly went up 5 million a season. Therefore the NHL cap would have been closer to 90 million at this point and all of a sudden it wouldn’t have froze the leafs when it came to signing additional talent. So to be fair to Dubas he couldn’t have expected this to happen when he agreed to make up Lamoriello’s (frank)ing over of Marner.

I think once Matthews is back tomorrow both line 1 and 2 will produce fantastic because the opposition won’t be able to let their primary defensive players simply focus on one line which will give both lines 1 and 2 opportunities that they have yet to see this year. Sort of like what happened in last years playoffs. 2 deadly lines is what a team built like the leafs truly need, because when one is meh the primary opposition defence focuses on line 1. So let’s hope Matthews, Marner, JT, and Nylander don’t get hurt this year.

I think as a fan base we overthink the players salaries....

in 4 years time, all of these big contracts are gone, unless we re-sign any of them, or sign an additional free agent, and its doubtful we are adding any time soon, so we have what we have...

Holl is fine... if we could get better, i'm sure they would have... any FA mistake free Dman out there?

I agree that it’s overthought tbh… like I said if it wasn’t for covid the cap would likely be around $90 million which is enough to make us ignore the current contracts. I’m kind of curious how much and quickly it will jump up once the flat cap rule gets lifted.

And as a fourth yes I like him as well (Holl), hoping him and Muzzin are just the pair that needs a few games but they’ll hit that mid season form soon and just be a solid pairing

I would love to see this 6 play similar to the group in 93 played.... its a pipe dream, just get the puck up, nothing fancy, let the forward skate with it, be smart in the defensive zone... and they all are reasonable at moving the puck up, as is Liljegren and Menell if he gets a look later on.

A healthy Auston changes everything.

Agree. And to add again... don't trade FIRST ROUNDERS. I chuckle at the line" we're going for it". Then bury my head because I know the next step.

It wouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t for the fact that the Leafs already had Tavares (11M) and Matthews (11.6M) signed. Three 11M contracts on the same team is idiotic. No Stanley Cup winning team in the salary cap era was built this way.

1. McDavid: 12.5
2. Panarin: 11.643
3. Matthews: 11.641
4. Karlsson: 11.5
5. Doughty: 11
5. Tavares: 11
7. Marner: 10.903

- Steven_Seagull

If they performed up to the level of those contracts, then the results may be different. Unfortunately, only Matthews is close, and in the playoffs none of them is anywhere near the best players in the league.

The Leafs were screwed more than any other team by covid. Every other team who signed big contracts has been able to enjoy the rising cap making the contracts provide better value over time.

If he could've he would've ZZ. I could've banged 5 girls last night.....ya okay Barb.

My thought, Marner doesn't want to play well with JT so Keefe doesn't think about that as an option. Marner wants to play with Matthews because his point totals will be higher than with JT.

Marner might not be the team player some of you think he is. I mean, it's not not a possibility.

Exactly.
Signing JT was not a mistake and still isnt, marner is a million overpaid whether covid occurred or not, however, if a million dollars railroads your entirely cap then its simply not good cap management.
To your point, matthews and marner simply did not perform like superstars last playoffs and it cost the team, who were already down JT and Muzzin

Hindsight is great.
If dubas did nothing at the deadline people would have raged, but he made a bad trade so he still gets raged on. Part of the job.
Trading first rounders are fine if you an another year of the player or you extend him.
