I thought we were talking about the Flyers, not the Whalers?

talking about Holmgren and his lack of experience getting the roles he was put into.

Being a former Flyers helped him get that job imo. If you feel otherwise that's ok. Fletcher outside though has the clarke connection.

The one thing hextall did that I loved is getting a outside nhl coach. Didnt pan out

Did you also know that Lappy only played 1 season with the Flyers, then he retired? He played the bulk of his career with the Kings. He was hired as an asst with the Flyers 3 years later. My point is I would hardly call Lappy a former Flyers player and at the time would have considered him an outside hire.

Well, its clear to me that by the time he became GM of the Flyers, Holmgren had a ton of experience to do that job.

I think that is how most folks start out. I am sure there are other examples outside of Holmgren were they started directly in a GM role. Remember he also got his role in the 80's. Much different landscape compared to today.

If memory serves I think Homer got traded to the Whalers from the Flyers right after they played the Flyers? Maybe Bill can confirm that.

Bob Clarked went directly from player to GM
