Finding the right trade in season is a nightmare.

If Calgary isn't trying to win, which they are (check their coach), then what are they doing with Johnny Hockey and Matt Tkachuk after this season? Not easy.

Find $10M in players coming back from Vegas that make sense from all angles (both teams cap, Vegas injury situation, Vegas trying to win, players having trade clauses).

Sure, a healthy Eichel moves Anaheim much closer to being a winning team, but being a winning team likely would start next season with Eichel's 3-4 month recovery time.

That would likely mean the Ducks 2022 1st is off the table.

I don't think any trade will include any teams 2022 1st when this happens.

An Eichel trade is brutal to try and figure out, which is why teams have been asking about the Sabres being willing to retain on Eichel.

- kingcong39

I'm with ya. Never said it would be easy, but potential trade partners shouldn't expect pennies on the dollar either. Like you said, if sabres retain, gotta pony up more

It seems logical that every team would at a minimum place lottery protection on a 22 1st, and likely more (top 10 protection, for example).

A 2023 1st seems a more likely outcome/end result.

The trade is so complex that I don't know what pony up means or looks like anymore.

The problem seems pretty obvious regarding the above and the cap.

Many of the teams that would love Eichel are both trying to win this season and are up against the cap.

They don't necessarily have let's say $8M-$10M in bad contracts to send back to the Sabres, as some of the $8M-$10M they would send back would be involving NHL players they would need to keep to still have a good chance at winning while Eichel is out for 3-4 months recovering from his surgery.

On top of the above, some of the bad contracts may have trade clauses that need to be waived, and it's likely not going to be easy to get those players to waive to come to Buffalo (Lucic from Calgary, for example).

It's why a trade during the season is so extremely difficult, as your vanishing at least one good player from a roster and Eichel, until Eichel returns from surgery.

I like my trade idea from yesterday financially speaking, revised by Buff36 to replace Theodore with Korczak and Smith

Krebs, Korczak, Tuck, Smith
For
Jack & Olofsson

Money works out and VGK gets immediate help on the wing with Olofsson to replace injuries there with Tuch, Stone, Pacioretty.

Hell, throw in Eakin at 50% retained....Gonna need a future back though

Yotes have 5 2nd rnd picks next year, and word is the top 50 this year most would have been 1st last year. They could throw a lot of picks at the Sabres.

I get it
But that’s the kind of thinking that really hurt us in the ROR trade, right???

The above just barely works from the Sabres perspective of hitting the cap floor, as they would still have work to do to get there.

https://www.capfriendly.c.../armchair-gm/team/2850348

I have questions though:

- Is Monahan waiving his NTC, as it seems likely the Sabres are on his 10 team no trade list?
- By taking Dube and Monahan from the Flames, you are taking 2/3 of their 2nd line
- With Eichel out 3-4 months until he's ready to play again, are the Flames going to be ok with taking a 3 to 4 month hit in their chances to win this season by losing 2/3 of their 2nd line, until Eichel returns?

An Eichel deal is far from being remotely easy.

- kingcong39

Taking salary wouldn’t be an issue elsewhere, if really needed. Bonus overages for rookie contracts can also help this, I think. Monahan moving like you said requires talking to. If you tell him you are bringing in Eichel, does he want to be there? Especially if there’s a 3 way worked out somewhere else. As for the flames being ok moving those two, their fans seem to be ok with it, so I guess ask them (also Dube is more of a 3rd line winger imo. He’ll be pushed down there with JG, MT, Pelletier, Mangiapane when Pelletier is ready that is)

It’s not easy, and I understand not NHL21. This off-season would have been a better time for something like this to happen.

And that is 1 of the reasons why the Sabres wasted his ELC by having him on the left instead of his off hand.

He can do that sleepwalking on the right against the best in the world.

The other move is in his own end where he cuts off hands and makes the stretch pass in 1 move

https://twitter.com/Pappa...6CC3PB9FDHojJyzbHAjw&s=19

He always played on the right here in Sweden when playing for Frölunda so it has been strange seeing him only playing left for the Sabres.

https://twitter.com/brand...Zxi-RTI9CBdbAbtH6Mfw&s=19

That’s the insane part. Scouts have been watching him crush it on his off hand since TV Pucken, yet the 1st thought was to try and undo years of training.

They did the same to Risto.

Sabres gonna Sabre.

Vegas isn't doing that deal until their injured players (Paccioretty and Stone) are back, right?

That could be nearly 2 months, which would be say early December at best, and then add 3-4 months for an Eichel recovery, assuming the Sabres will not budge on the surgery.

Could work.

It's not good business to stomp your feet and rule out anything. For instance, if they hold on to him all season, it's 10 mil they're paying him. If they trade him now with 2 mil retained, it's still 10m.

Six in one 2 dozen in the other

I believe rookie bonuses only help the end of season number as that's when they are applied, not in season.

The problem you neglected to mention is the Flames are trying to win right now, this season, and in the trade you suggested, you're replacing their current 2nd line Center and one of their 2nd line wings with nobody for 3-4 months, until Eichel is fully ready.

You're cratering their depth in season, which is why it wouldn't work.

Just send him to Calgary. Zary, Monahan, Dube, 1st. Don’t let Monahan in the building, ship him off (50% retained) anywhere for a first and decent prospect.

mangiapane would fit the new try hard image Sabres .

Throw him in as well

He sure would, but you're asking Calgary to throw away this season if you want them to include even 2 of Monahan, Dube, and Mangiapane as they don't have the depth to make that trade and still be good while Eichel takes months to be ready.

The Sabres and Eichel coming to an agreement on the surgery choice this past summer would've been a huge help with making an in season trade.

I can't see them going very far. Then Johnny Hockey's gone. Possibly Tkachuk too.
