Just because some GM's struggle to do it, doesn't mean all do. The Leafs have struggled to insulate their elite core with a strong secondary cast.
The Flyers have been doubling down on trying to upgrade a secondary cast ignoring that the studs of this foundation are lacking.
It so strange to me, even when we look back at recent times that a fanbase that saw Richards/Carter/Giroux/Briere up front thinks the current crop can get it done. It's nowhere near good enough, and the key figures are where this thing lacks.
To continue this path of hoping to find the appropriate pieces in the middle of the first round is folly. Pride is such a weakness. - FlyerFan3260
What's interesting is that you claim that you have to draft high in the first round and then name 4 players, 3 of which were drafted in the last 3rd of the 1st round

I figured you would bring that up.
Sure it happens, but the last few elite teams. They have the best statistical chances at winning every season, and that’s what I would aim for. They have gathered core pieces of their lineups from drafting high.
Outliers exist, but why not try and change course for one time. What is this fascination with continuing on with a clearly failed direction.
Fear leads to pointing at Edmonton and Buffalo, but Pittsburgh, Washington, Tampa, And Chicago are ignored. Think Colorado isn’t happy they chose to sacrifice some years being able to insert Byram into an already elite team?
Your arguments have some merit, I’ll entertain that but at some point when does this music stop, because we have been dancing to the same song for too long with no results. |

Does TB win to back cups without Kucherov and Point? Kucherov was drafted in the 2nd round and Point in the 3rd round.
Whenever this argument is brought up, I always wonder why the entire picture is ignored. If we look at the entire picture what we would find is that your conclusion would need to be changed. If you want to argue that the best way to get an elite player is to draft high in the first round, I don't think there is any doubt about that. However when we look at what teams win the Cup. We also have to look at teams that don't win the Cup that have elite players drafted high in the first round. Hell there are some teams that have more than one that haven't gotten it done. When we look at that, then we see what you have to strive for.
How do you propose the Flyers should execute your plan?

Laughton is too good of a player to be on the 4th line. What's the definition of a guy they plucked off of the street?

It’s strange to bring up Kucherov and Point but ignore Hedman, likely the biggest piece to their evolution toward success.
I’ll also entertain your question, even though the overt attempt to control the direction of a conversation is a clear attempt to guide it toward a specific result.
The plan should involve a complete tear down and commitment to maximizing the teams chances at high level talent introduction. If you’d like an easy example, I can point to something similar in what Yzerman is doing in Detroit, or what Sakic did in Colorado.
Now let me ask my question in return, at what point do we become the epitome of Einstein’s insanity definition?

Actually it's not strange at all. Here's why. TB drafted Hedman 2nd overall in 2009. It took 10 years for TB to win the Cup after drafting Hedman. They drafted Stamkos 1st overall in 2008. It took 11 years for TB to win the Cup after drafting Stamkos. Not until they added players like Kucherov, Point, Cirelli and Vasilevsky as well as other players taken in later rounds and some key trades did they finally become a Cup team.

The specific result I'm looking for is a full spectrum look at the facts and not just a laser focused look at one aspect of a Cup team.
Joe Sakic took over in Colorado in may of 2013. I just looked through their trade history and I don't see a list of trades that indicated a complete tear down by Sakic. Care to give some example of how he did this?
To answer your question, my displeasure of what the Flyers have done the last few years in team building comes from the realization that they have returned to operating like they did in the Holmgren years. We've discussed this before. Where you and I disagree is on the notion of a complete tear down.

I’ll honestly save myself the time because we won’t agree, but appreciate the conservation.
Chalk it up as a win if you like, in my age being able to step aside has been a wonderful lesson.
I’ll maintain that without a change of direction we will see ongoing repetition. |

I agree with the overall thrust of your argument but the problem is Flyer’s management. They’re kinda like the St Louis Cardinals and have this “Do Things The Right Way” mentality that will never let them tank.

That's a shame because while I don't agree with everything you say, I find you to be an intelligent poster. I'll finish with saying that the moves they made in the last few years, excluding the short term one year stuff, is far more likely to damage their chances at winning the Cup then they are to improve them.

I believe I read Willman from the practice lines. Big congrats to him on his NHL debut! What a story.
