My point was that planning years ahead because you assume you can get a player is a fools mindset and has disaster written all over it.
I can't think of a single reason besides hometown that would make Matthew's want to leave Toronto for Arizona. He'll be a hockey legend here and get far more recognition throughout the sport in Toronto than Zona, and sad as it is, much closer to winning a cup here.

Meh, if Matthews leaves it'll open up cap space for McDavid. |

You ignored the "for Arizona" part.
Are you under the impression Arizona has had playoff success?

That's a reason to go to Arizona?
Besides, the Leafs have outstanding chances of having playoff success between now and then. |

Players have short memories. What is happening now will be irrelevant in three years.
Everyone thougt Rick Nash was leaving Columbus because they hadn't had any playoff success.
But then Columbus made the playoffs one time, losing in the first round, and Nash resigned for 8 years. |

Listen, I'm not saying he's going. If the Leafs do have some real playoff success, and seem to be building towards something, then yeah. I can see him staying. If it's more of the same, I can see him walking. |

Kypper is the absolute king of 'please pay attention to me' hot takes. He'd sell his soul to be relevant.
Like everyone else Matthews will have a decision to make in a couple of years. Leafs can pay him more than everyone else so they're in the poll position. He'll have other options but I don't see it being Zona. |

8 x $$$ is always better then 7 x $$$.
I'm optimistic that he and Marner will find their 'compete' and this team will do well but hypothetically if the Leafs fail for the next 3 years WITH Matthews leading the team aren't the Leafs looking for a new Big Dog anyway. |

I think Nash's deal was under the old rules. |

One time, when Babcock put Marner on the fourth line for a couple games he was legit saying the leafs should trade him for Gudbranson… he was dead serious. |

Based on info from the morning skate, likely #Leafs lines are:
Leafs lines tonight will likely be:
Ritchie-Kampf-Marner
Mikheyev-Tavares-Nylander
Bunting-Kerfoot-Kase
Engvall-Spezza-Simmonds
Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Dermott
Campbell
Mrazek
I know we are obviously missing Matthews.
But I don't see a "shutdown" line unless all of these lines go in the blender again before game 1. |

I figured Brooks would take Matthews' spot on the first line as a placeholder. 🤷 |

Unless Matthews is going to be 3C, Kampf will move to 3rd line and Bunting moves to 4th. 3rd line becomes shutdown. After a while they probably decide Mik got enough of a chance on second line and Bunting moves there.
