Sheldon Keefe continues to try new combinations:
Ritchie-Matthews-Marner
Mikheyev-Tavares-Spezza*
Bunting-Kerfoot-Kase
Engvall-Kampf-Simmonds
*Nylander fill-in
Extras: Brooks, Semyonov, Gabriel, Amadio
Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Liljegren
Dermott-Biega
Campbell-Mrazek - Leafs43
Trading their 24th overall pick (Konecny) to get Dermott and Bracco is looking better and better each day.

Dermott has hit his mediocre ceiling with Sandin and, now, Lilybust leapfrogging him.
Frankly, the only thing that keeps Dermott in the lineup is Sandin and Lily's waiver exemption status. - mjones242
Agreed.
The same should hold true for Holl. Both are meh but I'd take Dermott over Holl every day. Yet Holl, who has been the worst player on the ice every preseason game so far, is getting a straight pass. It's insane. |

I am more angry at the fact that Aho was taken right after him.
The trade was fine. The player picked wasn't.

I think he is the #6 defenseman out of necessity. He will get claimed on waivers, and they probably don't carry 7 defenseman.
Can't really trade him either. The defensive depth isn't strong enough. - Leafs43
The only reason Liljegren is going to get ice time is because they don’t want to send him back to the marlies rusty and want to see if he’s ready to be called up.
Dermott has over 200 games played in his career, and since he plays a simple bottom six role they don’t need him to play as much. His job this year will be to play simple and let Sandin take any of the chances. |

I thoroughly agree with your Holl assessment and I've been a skeptic of his since last year. Muzzin has clearly carried Holl for a season now and yet inexplicably he seems to consistently get a pass.
I'm with you in that I don't actually think Holl has any more value as a d-man than Dermott. Honestly, if Holl was a LHD would he actually be playing Top 4 mins on this team? I think not.
Holl sucks balls and it's time for mgmt to recognize it. |

I'd gladly accept that.
I don't like Holl for obvious he sucks reasons, but him being on the 3rd pair is fine. It's where he should be. But if he fails at that, too, then put him in the box and dress Dermott. |

I still don't trust Dermott, maybe Keefe does.. I don't.. I want them to give Liljegren a chance, considering that he is also a RHD |

I don't know what Dermott is.
I thought he was going to turn into a puck-mover like Berard or Gardiner, but he doesn't really do that.
He's not a stay at home.
He's not physical.
He's not great a positioning.
He's not a particularly bad defenceman - he's just a giant tub of vanilla ice cream.
He's like Joe Colborne - I really want him to succeed, but I don't think he'll ever get there. |

Absolutely. Holl being a righty is arguably the only reason he's in the NHL.
Don't get me wrong, though. Holl started the past 2 seasons playing decently well. But that didn't last and he's proven to be all world useless without Muzzin. |

They signed him for two more years for a reason and my guess it’s to be the cheap stable d man who plays with Sandin this year and Liljegren next year.
Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Sandin Dermott
Send Liljegren down to play top ice time with the Marlies and only call him up due to injuries. That’s going to be this year. |

I agree with this, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what Dermott does well consistently. I mean, I think he's an ok defenseman, but just ok.. |

they did sign him, but maybe out of necessity? I think we can use him as a 7th d-man, but I don't know if I want him handling the puck under any pressure |

I'm the exact opposite.
No need to wait and see, though. We know what'll happen. Holl will continue to be ass awful and it won't ever be brought up. He'll stay on Muzzin's pair because he is apparently immune to repercussions. |

100%. It's unfortunate because I think he's for sure good enough to play on the Leafs, but he has options and the team needs to use them. |

I think he’ll finally be given a role this year to be the stay at home guy who lets Sandin do the puck movement primarily.
Before this he’s been constantly paired with different types of d men… for instance last year while paired with Bogo he was likely expected to be the puck mover last year

The leafs can’t afford 7 d men… they can’t bring Liljegren up because there’s only $80K in cap space |
