My only take on this is this...
If the Leafs were good enough to miss Marner or Tavares or Matthews for an ENTIRE season and still made the playoffs comfortably...I would be very happy with the team I have. - AdamFrench
If the leafs lost tavares they could use his cap 11 million in space to improve the depth.
Which is what Tampa was able to do. They were able to keep their stanley cup team together and not trade away parts of their 2nd and 3rd line to be cap complient. |

Who were the Leafs keeping that would have made up the 11mil in space? |

I think I am failing to express my point properly.
If we are so sure that losing Tavares and Muzzin was the deathknell of ANY Leafs success in the playoffs. Then I don't understand why people can't recognize losing a 130 point Nikita Kucherov for an entire year as some kind of sneaky plan is dumb or just proof that the Lightning were great. |

Two superstars who were born in Toronto, so they would be willing to come here for less. |

It can be both.
As I pointed out earlier, TSN says they have 4 of the top 13 players in the league, and that doesn't include Stamkos.
If you are having trouble grasping this concept, I suggest you look at any European soccer league's top team. |

Kucherov was actually injured. There was no debating this when the season begun.
He just postponed his return for at least a month and a half so it wouldn't cause cap problems to the team and, it just so happens, they didn't need him to make the playoffs.
So yes, Tampa's team last year were great, but they are still full of poop and we hate them and it should have been US winning the cup god (frank)ing dammit.

Cool. Can you show how they suck recently at drafting again? |

Their drafting from 2007 - 2014 is a little above OK, though.
Although my jealous rage makes me want to point out that a lot of them were high picks.
In other weak sauce news...

Plus nobody ever brings up Tampa's unfair advantage of drafting great players in random rounds and developing talent. - AdamFrench
Sure, but it doesn't change the fact that the cap in this league is a joke. |

What a beautiful world it would be if any team could be so great that losing a 130 point player for an entire season doesn't matter for them making the playoffs. - AdamFrench
Yes the version of the team that was cap compliant was still very good. I don't believe they get past Florida or Carolina without the deadline and injury players that blew up their cap.

If you weren't born in the 1920s, there would be a badly done photoshop job adding Caufield's face to that picture.
Missed opportunity for sure. - Scabeh
LOL. Couldn't be bothered, to be honest. |
