As we all know, every single team in the NHL read the tea leaves when the CBA was expiring in 2004 - but not the Leafs. They had bought their way out of trouble since the mid-nineties and filled the cupboards with nothing. Didn't scout, couldn't draft and wouldn't develop.

I mean for any of their foibles, Dubas and Lou and Shanahan deserve credit for implementing and improving upon a better scouting, drafting, and development plan for the organization.

I would argue that the days of "Draft schmaft" are not over yet... Dubas does trade a lot of 1st rd picks.

Agreed, never played a meaningful NHL game in his career, Islanders wasted a first overall pick (granted 2000 may well be the worst NHL draft in history) and he won cash for life. Islanders will finish paying him in 2029.
