Simmonds is done. I said it before you signed him when I was scared he'd end up in Montreal and I still think so today.

But he looks very respected in the Leafs room. Keefe seems to love that guy.

According to a 5 episode documentary I watched at least.

Simmonds will have a comeback year as long as he can stay healthy.

You can get over the cap by the same amount than of the injured player's salary.

But when the player comes back from injury, you need to be back to being cap compliant.

It's not free cap space unless the player is injured all year.

Exactly, So, I don't see how sending the Giraffe to the A, helps..

You can save up to 1M in salary when you send a player on a one way contract to the AHL.

I'm actually trying to keep Engvall.

The likelyhood of a short term injury on D is pretty high in my opinion. Eventually, a forward likely has to go on waivers.

Maybe Simmonds could go on waivers and threaten retirement if someone claims him like Spezza did.

I think that forward would probably be Engvall. I think sneaking him through now is the best way to keep him. But he could also be claimed.

Tough choice.

No way he makes it through waivers.

Do you not get cap relief with the injured players salary ? When they are placed on the IR...
- bixll

They have be injured for 24 days or 10 games in order to qualify for LTIR. That's the crux of the problem.

A defenseman gets twisted knee - needs a week to rest up - you're pooched. We have 5 healthy D who can play and $80k in capspace. We need to waive a forward and bring up a defenseman. Technically we are so tight to the cap that 2 minor injuries early before we've had to time to accrue any space will have us dressing 19 players.

So the smart play is definitely to choose who the 13th F is and waive him. I am in the "like Engvall" camp, but I think he's the one who'll get waived or traded for a 5th.

If it were up to me, I'd waive Simmonds, but they signed him for 2 years and the boys like him, so I very much doubt he's the one going.

If it were up to Dozzer, it'd be Kase.

We all have our guy we'd ship to the Marlies for capspace!

He only has 1.2 mill deal.. I don't see how it would be the answer for the Leafs.

Can he play 4th line minutes and play a certain style for $900K? There are a bunch of guys I like more than him but if he does give them something unique on the team. I’m not sure it’s worth it if he can’t make plays but maybe it’s ok in a limited role.

Do you mean fighting? If he can fight, he's worth the $900K?

It looks like it just frees up some cap space (900K) short term would be my guess.

Right, but if a cheaper defenseman (Dermott / Sandin / Holl) gets injured for 10 games / 24 days, you can place them on LTIR and bring up Liljegren. When they have healed and can return to the lineup, Liljegren is waiver exempt and can be sent down.

Not sure how good memory is but I feel like that 900k would be more space than they started last season with.

Not if it is short term. Need at least 24 days/10 games to go on LTIR.

So a 2 week injury to Muzzin doesn't get any cap relief.

How do they "encourage" the injured player to stay out longer? Like if Dermott has a mild ankle sprain and needs a week to rest his ankle, do the Leafs just tell him to take the next 3 weeks to recover?

If Tom Wilson chews Dermott’s leg off, do you have to wait 10 games before you can activate LTIR and fill in the extra salary space?
