They forgot to check the Lightning last year for sure... - bixll
This narrative really won't die...
The lightning followed all of the rules. Kucherov was hurt. He went on LTIR. They used his cap space. This is all the way LTIR is supposed to work.
The only way they can be accused of "cheating" is that they kept Kucherov on LTIR until the end of the season - when he probably could have been activated sooner (which you have to activate as soon as a player is healthy)
But there was no way for them to be cap compliant after the TDL. None. So they couldn't follow the rules, even if they wanted to.
This is a failure on the league 100% for not having mechanisms in place to be cap compliant when an injured player returns sooner than expected. (Or including cap limitations in the playoffs during the last CBA negotiations) |

Tampa should have put someone else on LTIR with a fake injury or maybe put Vasilievskiy on waivers

Someone sent this to me - crazy and concerning. I hope he is ok, I am not a Habs fan but how can you not be a Carey Price fan if your Canadian and/or a goalie?
NEW YORK/TORONTO (Oct. 7, 2021) – The National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) announced today that goalie Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens will be away from the team while voluntarily taking part in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.
There will be no further comment. |

That’s to bad, hopefully he gets the help he needs.
Is there usually a minimum absence with this? I feel like its a minimum 30 days type thing. |

Yes and no.
You're right, but the intention of LTIR is that you can replace an injured player with an equivalent salary for the duration of the injury. Scabs is actually correct - when Kucherov was healthy enough to return from LTIR, it is actually expected that Tampa would waive the players creating the cap problems. Obviously they can't trade them - and if no one claims the players, they're f'd. It's not like the doctor's don't know a player's progress around the TDL to have an idea.
They used the rules to circumvent the cap and they were guilty of extending Kucherov beyond the time he was ready for their own use. It's not like it hasn't been done before - but it is circumvention.

I’m as classy as it gets in here.
I do hope he’s ok, but a lot of strange stuff going on with him.
Left available for the expansion draft, to a knee injury and now mental health issues. I think he’s a great guy and mean no harm.

No the narrative won't die and it is much more complicated than just saying that Tampa was compliant. The league made a decision to look the other way despite overwhelming evidence that Kucherov was ready to play well before the playoffs began. The hard cap is the real culprit and issue. It was brought in for several reasons, fiscal responsibility and having a level playing field for teams being the major reason. The biggest problem is that this has led to teams attempting and some succeeding at cheating the cap. Teams like Chicago, Tampa, the Leafs and Detroit have all cheated and got away with it. There are many ways not in the open yet that can and may be exploited down the road. For example let us suppose that McDavid is a UFA. A cash rich team like the Rangers offers him a contract for $9.5 M X 7 to play. At the same time offers to pay his dad, his mom and his girlfriend $6M each for 7 years to be food and beverage tasters for the organization. It is cheating and the league may chose to not ignore it. Until the NHL gets rid of the hard cap cheating will continue. |
