He only has 1.2 mill deal.. I don't see how it would be the answer for the Leafs. - bixll
The idea as well isn't just the actual salary, it's the daily accrual of space, which is sort of weird, but each day that passes where you don't spend to the cap, you accrue the space you haven't used which creates the flexibility they'll need later in the year.
I think real flexibility lies in moving on from Kerfoot, but I haven't seen anyone new and cheaper in camp that made me think, "There's a guy who fills those shoes."
But I will say that a guy like Amadio had a fantastic camp and if he keeps doing for the Marlies what he did in camp, he would deserve the first look from a Marlie call-up. |

I didn't know the 24 days or 10 games thing.. - bixll
I think in the wording it says, "To qualify for LTIR, a player must be expected to miss at least 10 NHL Games AND 24 days of the NHL season"
If they are "expected" to miss the required time above then the team can begin to accrue savings from day 1 and not wait the 24 days or 10 games.
I believe. |

How do they "encourage" the injured player to stay out longer? Like if Dermott has a mild ankle sprain and needs a week to rest his ankle, do the Leafs just tell him to take the next 3 weeks to recover? - PatC80
Joking aside - I am certain that teams have done this on any number of occasions. A guy is going to take two weeks to heal and they aren't a top-6 or top-4 guy . . . you probably suggest they "make sure" they're ok for another week and a half.
From the player's side, they do have PA protection, so if they want to return and don't want to help the team "as requested", they can file a grievance, but it seems like a career limiting move for a player who is likely a bottom pairing / bottom-6 player. |

Not sure how good memory is but I feel like that 900k would be more space than they started last season with. - joel878
I thought it was closer to 250g's at the beginning of the season last year.
But I could easily be incorrect. |

That's correct. Once you have applied for LTIR the cap relief begins immediately, but that player may not return for the 10 games or 24 days. The CBA (there's a few documents, but I think it's in the CBA) has a clause that says the NHL reserves the right to investigate teams that are thought to be abusing the LTIR process - but clearly they don't use that reserved right. |

Personally, I don't miss the days where Detroit had every superstar player they wanted and the Rangers would overpay everyone but still suck.

We definitely had more room - because we assigned Engvall to the taxi squad because we couldn't afford to keep him, but the daily accrual was enough that he had to wait . . .like 25-30 days before being called up. He did end up being called to the Leafs a few times on Emergency Loan, before being assigned to the roster about a month in (Thornton was on LTIR, and then Simmonds joined him right before Engvall came up).
