I think you could get a 3- 4 dman with a year or two left. I dont have the time to dig them up...but Dubie has people for that.
- Fakepartofme

It's not easy, but the point is well taken. There's not a lot of guys expiring next year. Guys you could maybe consider that teams might consider moving:

Dumba, Sanheim, Severson, Dunn, Weegar, Orlov, Erik Johnson, Duncan Keith . . .

In that list maybe Dumba, Sanheim, Weegar or Dunn would be a top-4 guy - and likely just as not affordable after the year+ is up.

I doubt Florida would move Weegar, but Minnesota (Dumba), Philly (Sanheim) or Seattle (Dunn) might be inclined to move those pieces for future incentives if this year doesn't go as expected for them.

One of the things the All or nothing series missed out on that I was really hoping there would be a lot of was Dubie's discussions with other GM's and his own management team.
A little more insight into those discussions would have been interesting to see IMO. Not enough time on the TDL talks, I get they may have been limited to what they could show (other people would have to sign off on it) but it would have been great to see.
One thing the NHL could do to generate off season interest, is a yearly 5- 6 part series on the behind the scenes discussions leading up to TDL and draft day. Give you an inside look at the movement within the NHL of the previous year and how it all went down.
Logistically, it could be a nightmare, having 64 cameras spread out among the 32 teams. But there are ways around it, maybe limit cameras to 20 - 22 teams and do audio for any convos with the other 10 teams.
But I would watch it for sure.

- Fakepartofme

I would watch the hell out of that.

I'd watch it as well (I haven't watched All or Nothing yet, but I'll be getting around to it). I think the difficulty is that they probably can't talk too much about players because if it's someone they don't have under contract (speculation talk) it's borderline tampering, and if it is, it could affect negotiating power or certainly cause issues if the player isn't perceived well.

That said, there was war room footage of Chiarelli when he was with Boston making the decision to trade Tyler Seguin. It was sort of interesting, but also alarming that there were about 4 of them in the room and no one objected to trading Seguin.

If there is a hockey trade to be had where we land a Top 4 d-man - who has term - in return for Rielly, I'd consider doing it.

I just don't think that deal realistically exists within the boundaries of this season.

- mjones242

I'd look at west coast teams, Anaheim is a possibility

Agreed

The path to the promised land runs through Anaheim

I can think of a few I would like.. Starting with someone like Jonas Brodin, if he agrees to the move and waives his NMC

Wait. Top 4 with term will be tricky unless we’re ok with 3-4 guys.

Wait. Why would someone trade a top 4 guy with term for someone on an expiring contract?
- Canada Cup

They wouldn't. Yet, we will hear about the mismanagement of Morgan's contract for the entire year.

That clears everything up... Thanks.

I can see why you are so down on the Leafs Management.. Moves like that will change the team forever.

- bixll

If we are not "successful" this year, ask yourself: what does this team look like this time next year?

Imo, this is not a team that can win. We are delaying the inevitable.

I edited that. Maybe a 3-4 guy. We’ll lose something because of the term issues

Ya for sure, it would have to be edited as there are impacts to people's lives. But I think you could get enough interesting footage that would provide more insight than we have.
I dont like the NFL, but one thing it does well (same with the NBA) is they generate headlines (sometimes not always positive) or discussion throughout the year, including off season. I've heard the NFL has several "behind the scenes" type shows that keep people watching NFL related products even in the off season.
June and July the NHL has the draft and FA day. But a series like this in late August prior to training camps could be worth a view.

So what is the goal for this year, a mini rebuild, going for the Cup, winning a few rounds?

Ha! I was going to bring that scene up in my response. That clip completely changed my perception on the relative intelligence at play per hockey executives.

Cup or bust.

At this point if they want to be considered a legit threat to win the Cup, they need to start winning playoff games..

For me, getting to the 2nd round would still be a fail

Fowler is the only d-man of any relevance on that team that has any term left. (Shattenirk would be a hard pass)

Frankly, I'd rather just let Rielly walk and then sign Hampus Lindholm in the off-season.

Pretty sure anything less than a couple of playoff rounds this year means Dubas is done in Toronto.

I can't imagine he'd risk trading Rielly unless there is a freak injury to Morgan or he completely sucks balls this season.

Then don’t trade Rielly unless you get back somebody(s) who give as much as you gave. We really need to be aware of clock ticking on Matthews contract

So in his media availability, Rielly says that this year he is "going to focus on taking care of himself". This guy is not a happy camper. Management are pissing away our assets.
- fifty__missions

Last year he focused on "taking care" of Tessa Virtue. I think this quote is a good sign.

Yes, that would be fine.
A team looking for more offense would be interested in Morgan.

Right?! Like if you were in that meeting, throw a chair. Flip a table. Make it clear that trading a 21 year old Tyler Seguin for Loui Eriksson, Matt Fraser, Joe Morrow and Reilly Smith is a really, really dumb idea.

You know you're on camera. Jump the desk and punch Chiarelli in face while yelling, "You crazy madman, you'll ruin us all!" Modern life is about memorable moments on social media.
