OEL was never a #1. Was a #2 for maybe 2 or 3 seasons. He's probably a #3 at best now.

Hughes is a #3 only because he scores so much. He may never be the all around defender to lead a pairing.

Poolman a #4 because he can hold his own with a 1, 2 or 3. Hamonic same as Poolman.

Myers is a #5, Can play with a #3 but can't lead a 3 and can't bring up a #6

OEL has never been a Norris caliber defenceman, he’s Edler with more offence and way less physicality. Edler was a good dman in his prime, but he was never in a Norris conversation, same for OEL and his best years are behind him.

Doesn’t mean he can’t be a solid top four guy for the Canucks, but he’ll never be a top tier defenceman.

The only way is that #1 defensemen standard is just lowered considerably compared to what it used to be.

Take half #1's and the top half of #2's

Defensemen that play like forwards have to be included also. It's pretty sad.

I was going from memory, didn’t want to look it up, the point remains, he has never seriously challenged for the award and the closest he got was a long time ago (by athlete ages).

Additional - by memory, I mean I looked it up around the draft when they acquired him, so my memory isn’t that good. Two/three months is about it’s range…
