I'm with Fitz on this one. Some of these vets are here specifically to be the extras, so the kids can play in Roch until there's a real opportunity to come up and play.

It's cool, Cong just asked me what I would do. I'd make it a meritocracy and keep the best players around. In my imaginary world I'd have Samuelsson playing with Pysyk and bump Hagg to the press box.

Understood and accepted that it's rarely a pure meritocracy and other factors play into the situation

Sabres coach Don Granato said defenseman Will Butcher pulled him aside and offered to play in as many preseason games as possible.

Butcher skated a game-high 28:15 last night. Granato said his decision making was in midseason form.

I expect the D to be pressing hard to get the puck out of our end and force it down low to the forwards

call it a hunch but he fits that part, as does dahlin, joker and miller

I see several.

He's 19 and hasn't played in North America. Roch might be the best place for him to develop, and that's really the only part that should matter. There really is no downside to starting in Roch.

1 pre-season game against mixed levels of competition isn't a lot to base a decision off of.

His contract can slide. If you're going to start him in the NHL, you don't want to do it as a trial. You want him up for the season. In that sense, they can hurt themselves by making the wrong call here.

Fortunately, we get to see more first.

I see a prominent one ( I felt like writing prominent after you wrote several to keep our writing quaint)

To help put warm bodies in the building. There seems to be a JJ movement underway and he won't fill the building but he might help sell a few more tickets and increase ratings a bit, especially if he plays with Cozens and they do well.

Both can play the wing in the bottom 6 and have logged 100 + games doing so

With so many kids, the best situation for their development is #1 to me. Don't see a reason to rush anyone this season. I'd be conservative on it.

With an injured Samuelsson, Roch is an easy call. His opportunity will come.

Gotta keep 23 on the roster and guys get dinged up. They'll get in sooner than later.
- Hank Balling

So let them actually PLAY in Rochester & get called up when needed

Sitting in the press box does the kids ZERO good
Makes no sense

Meh
Finishing near .500 means much less to me than getting a high pick in this draft

Even if we had better goaltending,
we’d still be bad this year

It’s gonna be a tough season for us regardless

I can’t help but think draft status is a factor for people saying he should go to Rochester

If it was Quinn looking the way JJ does I’m not sure anyone is lobbying for him to go to Rochester

I think back to Mittelstadt's first preseason and it was pretty quickly evident that he was not ready. I respect the development point as it relates to JJP and can see the benefit of it, but I also can't help but see a guy who looks like an NHLer

At some point I’d like the Sabres to start operating as a professional hockey team interested in playing the players who are good, and not playing the ones who aren’t.

Maybe someday.

If the nameplate on JJP said Quinn I'd say the exact same thing. Can't speak for others, but I'd still want him in Rochester to start. It's clear that JJP is physically more prepared for the NHL than Quinn, but I still hold that Quinn is more skilled.

They just got rid of every talented player on the team over 24, unless they literally could not be moved. NHL teams don't do that.
